Bought a Colt AR-15 CAR-A3, HBAR Elite and need some help! (Vanity)

Bought this gun today and am asking the experts what over the counter ammo feeds through this weapon? As stated, the gun is a flat-top with a Simmons scope along with a bi-pod as the only add-on's. The serial number is BK010XXX and I believe this a post-ban weapon, correct?

I have shot competively in the past with .45 auto's and this is my first semi-auto rifle. I believe this dude will drive tack's as I have read. I just would like some overall advise.

“I like Federal in my match AR for just starting out.

I do reload for it with 69 Grain Sierra MatchKings, H335 powder and Winchester Primers.

Keep away from Wolf cartridges because of the heavy lacquer coating but any reputable cartridge will work fine.

Don’t be tempted to use the military cleaning rods. They will destroy that bore. Buy a good cleaning rod from a company called Dewey. You can order it from MidwayUSA.”

Again, this is why I posted this here. I really appreciate your response and advise. I wouldn’t have known this....thanks again.

Advice? worst case scenario, you will need to bury it after telling all your neighbors and half the world you have it, get some large diameter PVC pipe, either glue both ends for a sure seal or have one end with a threaded plug, grease is real good, throw some dry ice in with it and let it displace the corrosive oxygen and then seal it up.
Get as much ammo as you can afford.

If all goes well and we don’t see a gun ban in the US then take care of it, learn how to strip it down and clean it properly and the right kind of lubricants, if you find any deals on uppers like a bigger cartridge then snag them up.

I have 2 AR 15s but my real pet is my Springfield pre-ban M1A in .308.

I second the Dewey. Use it in my AR and my Garand. It has a coated shaft, and a sliding cone-shaped piece that you line up with the front of the barrel so that you don't rub the rifling. I also agree about Wolf ammo - for emergency use only IMHO. I like Federals as well, but I have a large quantity of unbranded military ammunition for use in "emergency".

I'll have to look into the 69-grain Matchkings. I don't have .223 dies yet, but I intend to get a set. I think that it's high time that I got more acquainted with my reloading equipment.

With a 1in9” you should be able to shoot up to 69 grainers no problems.

Tell your wife that buying a gun is a great investment.

Better yet, tell her there was a sale. She'll understand.

Don't forget about Magazines. Sorry, can't help with a good source. You could try Brownell's. I don't care for the thirty rounders. I love the twenty rounders and they seem to be more reliable.

I'm sorry to admit that with the purchase of the SIG .45 two weeks ago along with this purchase of the AR-15 I was scrambling to come up with funds that were “not obvious”. I walked into our walk in closet and saw the large container I have for emptying out my pockets for change everyday. I waited until the wife went to the store and exchange the change for cash at the bank. Almost $500 bucks!

Yes my gun was “on sale” as well.

Out of stock. What should I be looking for in a quality mag? The gun as I said is original and hardly shot and it came with only the original mag.

Second that. Don’t use 5.56 unless it says “5.56” on the receiver.

Winchester whitebox 55gr 5.56 should treat it well. If you aren't overly concerned about quality for blasting ammo, the Wolf stuff is ok. Just make sure it isn't the coated steel cased ammo. I've heard some anecdotal stuff about it that isn't good.

If you have a stock 1:9 twist 18" barrel, it oughta eat anything from 45gr to 62 gr with decent results.

For lighter barrel profiles, I agree. NATO standard 5.56 is loaded a couple thousand CUPS (pressure measurement) over stock .223. In thinner chambers, it could go nuclear on you.

My 20" 1:9 stainless superbull .223 eats 5.56 with ease. It weighs half a ton compared to my 20" "heavy" profile 5.56 though.

I never did get into the shorter barrels. Something about not letting Tangos get quite that close... I'd prefer to retain the ability to reach out to at least 500yrds. Lugging around a couple extra inches of barrel isn't gonna hurt me any.

Thanks and I will post some gun porn when I get the gun. I’m on delay because of the back up right now.

The Black Hills ammo that is on the link you sent jogged my memory. I lived in Wyoming for 21 years and was 130 miles from Rapid City. I used to buy .45 auto in bulk from them when they started the business.

Thanks for the link!

I just noticed that the rifle was an HBAR. Should be OK with the 5.56. As Dead Corpse said I wouldn't do it in a lighter barrel unless it specifically said 5.56 on it, or is of known military quality. Now you just need to get several thousand rounds of ammo, a bunch of range and training time and you'll be all set.

Any problems ejecting with the 5.56?
