Just as we teach math and writing, arts and athletics, So when I'm President, I will set a goal for all American middle and high school students to perform 50 hours of service a year, and for all college students to perform 100 hours of service a year. If he meets all the aspirations of the totalitarian left then my daughter will be entering high school in the middle of his second term. There's nothing I wouldn't do for my daughter. She and my wife are the things that define my life. I am completely and totally devoted to them. And I say now (and all of you can hold me to it later) my daughter will never participate in any compulsory community service program. I will bear any burden or absorb any cost to prevent the state from making my child into a slave.
I often argue that we all need to be practical about political issues. But there comes a time for everyone when principles matter too much for compromise. Everyone has to draw a line somewhere and for me, I draw that line in front of my family.
Set all the goals you want Obama, but you cannot have my daughter. You want to take her? Come try.

“Community Service” is often used in NZ as an alternative to sentencing for Youth when they get involved in minor crimes. (Sometimes it is even used for adults.)
What are your feelings on that?
MANDATORY “volunteer work” defeats the purpose of “volunteer work”. It’s perverted.

And those that don't "volunteer" get to go to the "re-education" camp for a little "attitude adjustment".
Seems to me the VOLUNTEERS will get to enthusiastically run the "re-education" camps.
And only blacks and rats can "volunteer".
They do the same thing in the US. I have less of a problem with that because it’s a punishment. If you sentence convicts to work on a prison farm or a road gang I don’t think it’s a big deal (so long as proper precautions are taken of course.)

So by “compulsory community work” in the context of your post, you exclude anything ordered by the court as a compulsory consequence of crime.

50 hours of mandatory govt service for a 13 year old is virtually an hour every weekend.
for a 16 yr old that is 2 hours of service ot the govt, every blasted weekend.
I prefer to choose when and how my child performs activties that improve her and thus the nation.

California often uses community service to allow violent felons to walk, and to help defense attorneys get rich.
Which is only fair, since attorneys created the system, and they should at least get something out of it besides credit.
