'Da Vinci' actor: Bible needs 'fiction' disclaimer

While promoters of "The Da Vinci Code" have tried to downplay the film's challenge to Christianity, actor Ian McKellen took a shot at the Bible in an interview with the "Today" show, saying Scripture should carry a disclaimer that it is "fiction."

McKellen, who played Gandalf in "The Lord of the Rings" triology, was responding to a question from host Matt Lauer about the requests by some Christian groups to insert a "fiction" disclaimer at the beginning of the controversial film, which suggests Jesus and Mary Magdalene were man and wife and that the divinity of Jesus was an invention of fourth-century church leaders.

The clip can be seen here, courtesy of the weblog Newsbusters.

McKellen, who announced in 1988 he is homosexual, said in a 2004 interview with the London Telegraph he rips out the book of Leviticus, which condemns homosexuality, from the Gideon Bible in every hotel room in which he stays.

It may be me, but I can't help but feel that if McKellen is really a atheist, he wouldn't care either way about what the Bible says.

He sounds like he should in the "Sex-Men" instead of the "X-Men." You can't teach an old fag new tricks.

Let's see - We have the Bible has withstood 2000 years of review from the most respected scholars in the west, but this homosexual actor has trumped all that with his compelling world-view of buggery.

Just another pervert shaking his fist at God - but "He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The Lord shall hold them in derision. Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, And distress them in His deep displeasure.." Ps 2

Do you think McKellen might have a really bad eternity?

...in an interview with the "Today" show...

Doesn't the Today show have a fiction declaimer?

And the movie promotion continues. I wonder if McKellan actually believes this or not. I wouldn't be surprised but, this smells like a desperate attempt to stir up more controversy so more people will see his film; a film that is getting roundly hammered by critics.

If by that you mean he won't have eternal life (because the wages of sin is death) it will be God's 'strange act'...and I don't imagine there'll be much joy in it (his death)....will sentence him (and even the righteous will scarcely be saved, remember) to eternal death.

The idea of eternal hell & suffering causes many to reject God. Naturally, since it is a lie of Satan. Try Ecclesiastes 9:5....and 9:10.

It is possible to be a Christian, and not believe in Hell (as eternal suffering). Pity him, yes.

Try Ecclesiastes 9:5....and 9:10.

I will use the whole council of God's word including "... where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever." Rev 20:10 and the words of Christ - "to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched—— 44 "where ‘Their worm does not die, And the fire is not quenched.’ Mk 9:43

In addition the earliest teachings of the apostolic church including Polycarp the disciple of St. John. I think your exegesis is way too weak to simply say "lie of the Devil".

Orthodoxy reigns in matter of dispute unless there is clear and compelling evidence to the contrary.

Yup.
That'll "make it go away".

We'll see. You'd be the .000009% who doesn't grind the ole axe. :)

including "... where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever." Rev 20:10 and the words of Christ - "to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched—— 44 "where ‘Their worm does not die, And the fire is not quenched.’ Mk 9:43

1. Compare the quality of the use of eternal, forever, etc. with Jude 7. Ask; Can I go to some location - in Iraq? - and see the smoke?

What is forever is the result (of the judgement) not the suffering.

and 2. If you do indeed rely upon the "whole council (sic) of God's word", then I suppose it would be reasonable to expect you to search it for references to death being like sleep. (I think there are over 150 such references) and think about how "death as a state of dreamless sleep" (my words for it) beautifully ties in with what happens when Jesus comes back in 1Thessalonians 14 - the dead in Christ shall rise -and see the golden thread of consistent truth.

and 3. God love you, lets not pound each other over the head with God's word, which we should both be rightly divining, and sounding like a couple of arguing pharisees. We can take this over to the religion threads, and I will participate in discussion as time permits, FRiend.

"shaking his fist at God "

Good Lord you got that right.
That is what this is all about isn't it?

"Do you think McKellen might have a really bad eternity?"

If his angst is so great that he has to resort to taking out his rage by ripping up books, then it sounds like he's not too happy in this life, either. Heaven is a free gift - people make their own hell. He has done some great acting, as have Alec Baldwin and a lot of other looney lefties. This is when we have to exercise the theatrical "willing suspension of disbelief".

What's his email?
I'd hate for his Great Workaround Plan to fail just because he's ignorant of the other passages.....:)

I think I'll spend the evening blacking out all the parts I have problems living up to.
Surely God won't hold me responsible for things I don't have in my bible.....right?.....;]

"willing suspension of disbelief"

Or willful disbelief because he'd have to stop, otherwise.....:D
