Linux growth 'to outstrip Windows by a factor of 3' (Oracle Estimate)

Over the next five years, Oracle is predicting annual growth of 12 percent for the open source OS

Linux adoptions are to grow in the next three to five years at nearly triple the rate of Windows, according to Oracle.

In an interview at the LinuxWorld conference in Sydney, the database company suggested Linux deployments had grown beyond an adoption phase, and were now becoming ubiquitous in small and large businesses alike.

Monica Kumar, director of Oracle's Linux programme office, pointed to the open source operating system becoming mainstream as "businesses are looking to Linux as a way to save money," and quotes a projected annual growth rate of 11.7 percent over the next five years. The software heavyweight claims analysts project Windows' growth over the same period as being 3.6 percent per year.

"We don't come across many big companies these days that don't have a Linux strategy, which is in contrast to the market three years ago," says Kumar.

It's not just enterprise customers leading the charge, though. "Small [companies] are now betting their businesses on Linux".

Kumar points to market awareness and a growing number of Linux-savvy developers in developing countries to drive the uptake, and suggests open standards are a huge driver.

"Linux is mainstream. There are a lot of questions that we used to get maybe two years ago where people used to say: 'Is Linux really ready for the enterprise? Can you give me some proof points? Who's deploying it? ...I need to prove the ROI or TCO to my CIO about Linux'. It's been two years and I don't get that question anymore."

She also goes on to point out a shift in adoption drivers: from the developers at the front line to the CIOs.

"We're now seeing adoption driven from the CIOs, instead of from the individual developers, and it's allowing Linux to pick up momentum."

The company has recently released a free version of its flagship database product in an attempt to woo developers towards Oracle technologies.

I admit my mistakes, just as I did on this thread, because that's what they are.

You and newbie and others lie, then lie more to try to cover them up, just as your posting history shows.

"You and newbie and others lie, then lie more to try to cover them up, just as your posting history shows."

Ha! I challenged you to point to a specific mistake, or "lie", as you would call it, and you've failed to do so on numerous occasions.

Instead, you've chosen to attribute to me things that I haven't said, knock over your straw men, and declare victory. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Again, I'd like to know about a specific mistake that I've made in posting to you. You won't point one out, other than a complete posting of my history, followed by a "see, I told you so".

That kind of tactic doesn't cut it here. You know it. That's why you keep avoiding my request for specificity. I'd be the last to say that I've never made a mistake here, but according to you, every post that I make is incorrect, which makes me wonder why you're having so much trouble finding one to give me as an example.

You post on all the linux lie threads, just like this one. Some foreign rag, quoting a competitor to Microsoft, typical BS from you guys. And here you are, attacking me for exposing the additional attempts at linux lies by noobie and ziggy. Some additional BS about microsoft only having a 40% market share, and VMWare being a linux core. Typical BS, nothing new, obviously.

Unlike you, the other posters here and myself have proven there is truth in what they say--to the tune of hundreds, if not thousands of times. Simply put, they've been able to back up 99.9% of what they post with at least a shred of clear, hard evidence.

You cannot back up anything you say. In fact, in an earlier thread, you posted a remark and then completely denied said post--three posts later.

Am I missing something here or are you just utterly failing to see the irony and projection in what you post?

Who are you talking to? Are you really that lost?

There's not been any truth in much of anything you've had to say, starting with your lies that the open source "movement" as led by Richard Stallman wants to co-exist with proprietary software, when as I've showed you on his own websites he states his "utlimate goal is to make proprietary software obsolete".

If I'm lying, why are there so many links that indicate I'm right?

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=%22make+proprietary+software+obsolete%22&fr=FP-tab-web-t-332&toggle=1&cop=&ei=UTF-8

Again, the liars never admit their mistakes, they simply spread more lies trying to cover them up.

The evidence is in the scores of virulent postings since May 2003. All of which seem to have been constantly refuted.

There is a subtle hint found throughout all these refutations, though I'm starting to wonder why some around here aren't picking on said hint.

This is a much better article, source, and story. IBM looks to be in real trouble with their bet on "services" based on "free software", according to IBM itself.

IBM services unit seeks profit in smaller deals

http://yahoo.reuters.com/stocks/QuoteCompanyNewsArticle.aspx?storyID=urn:newsml:reuters.com:20060403:MTFH25382_2006-04-03_19-28-26_N03308353&symbol=IBM.N&rpc=44

facing falling revenue from selling computer services...huge multibillion-dollar service deals become rarer among cost-conscious customers...IBM cut about 15,000 service jobs last year...fewer deals valued at $1 billion and higher...Revenue at the services division fell 5.9 percent...services gross profit margin, a key measure of profitability, was only 26 percent...IBM's software business, by contrast, had a gross profit margin of nearly 88 percent in 2005.

Yet they are pushing free software instead, how much more stupid could they be.

More linux lies. No it doesn't, because they don't want to have to release their source code for free.

"Some foreign rag, quoting a competitor to Microsoft, typical BS from you guys."

There you go again, attacking me with lies. Show me where I've quoted a Microsoft competitor or a "foreign rag". Once again, your usual unfounded allegations with no proof to back them up. And again, all requests for definitive proof go ignored. It would be funny if it weren't so sad.

I explained that you simply attacked straw men, and your response is...to attack another straw man. How typical.

You need to stop and go back and actually look at my posts and find things to discuss there, rather than continually making things up out of thin air. But, I don't expect you to, because at your core, you are a liar and that leaves you totally unable to deal with reality on any level.

Thanks for proving my point yet again.

Do I have that one on the Lie List? If it's not too much trouble, can you point me to it? Thanks.

The only lies on here are obviously yours, starting with your claim I lied when I called your cult leader Stallman a whacko leftist. If there's any lurkers who doubt it, check the link below, especially the "political" links.

GE, its a common mistake to think ESX is linux because the console is a Linux system which is just a privlidged VM... Why is it you dont allow others to make mistakes but when you state something that is incorrect mistake must be the obvious assumption..

Wow. It's a lie-fest for you today, ain't it? I already told you that I too think Stallman is a whacko leftist, and I've never defended the guy. If I'm wrong, show me the post.

Again, show me where I claimed you lied about Stallman being a whacko leftist. You can't. Another lie. Hooray for you. Going for some sort of record?
