"Make the right wing strong" bump.

They didn't and reaped the harvest of their folly.

true, true. They would have been better off never waking him and doing as they pleased. Thank God they didn't

Have you seen Saving Prvt Ryan and/or the longest day? Both good. The longest day is like a clean version of SPR

Omaha Beach was tough enough to take without German armor counterattacking. It was critical to keep them off the beaches.

I've seen both movies. The Longest Day was cleaner but I thought it was a much more complete telling of D-Day.

Band of Brothers was also excellent.

Never seen Band of Brothers. Saving Private Ryan gave a better picture of what life was like for a soldier, The Longest Day was, as you said, perhaps a better account of the D-Day invasion.

My Granddaddy's war. He served in the Navy and got a medal for going below deck to rescue a fellow crewman. He said he didn't need a medal to do his duty and rescue another soldier, that the guy would have done the same for him. He suffered from lung damage from that action of heroism, for the rest of his life.

He married Grandma after he got back from the war, they had four kids, weathered the depression, he worked the factories in Pittsburgh, eventually making tour boss. He died in 1969. RIP, Grandpa Alfred.

Toby Keith's video "American Soldier" features reenactments of American soldiers from various wars, including a doughboy wearing that recognizable WW I helmet climbing out of a trench with a bayonet and charging the German lines. It's nice to see WW I being memorialized, since it's usually the forgotten war.

I noticed that as well. That video is very powerful.
