The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Good morning! Man...these weekends without a computer are rough...can't wait until THAT'S over.

We did a lot of work on the office this weekend, but STILL haven't gotten to the painting point. You have to realize that when we started this, there were fake wood panels on all the walls, so we had to take THOSE down, take down the wood they were mounted on, and THEN the walls had painted over wall paper on 'em - several layers. So mostly we've been scraping and scraping and sanding and scraping. Finally got down to spackling last night, but I'm not sure what I'm s'posed to put in the corners - what do you fill dry wall corners with? Some sort of caulking? There's nothing there now - the first layer was wall paper, so they never bothered with any kind of fill.

Tonight we may get as far as applying primer. And then...painting is the easy part! Whew!

Also took a massive load of stuff to the dump...old carpets and busted appliances and furniture I hadn't gotten around to getting rid of and that was just sitting in the basement. Ended up only costing me sixteen bucks, so I was happy. Excpected much, much more.

Snow, snow everywhere, and not a flake for us! *sigh* Well, actually we got a few inches, but only a few. Bummer. Of course, I do realize there is such a thing as too much of a good thing, but...

And it's currently -15

How do ya do that? Any ideas for sites that might have instructions?

At least the drywall is in pretty good shape...could be worse, I guess!

It's chilly here today and I've got a nuisance head cold that won't go away. :-(

Good morning everyone! I got an email from Andy's MOM!!!

Hey there!

WOW!  Andy received the knives and IS THRILLED!  What a terrific surprise...and a privilege to be included in the group that the Hobbit Hole folks have chosen to honor!  The craftsmanship is exceptional...what a treasure!  Even the "holster" ....scabbard?....is set up perfectly according to Andy!

Please pass along to everyone involved how much this has meant to a very grateful young Marine!

God bless you all,

Chris

You're welcome. I must admit, I lost sleep over this.

I got My Precious yesterday and Steve has already started working on it. We inched it down into the shop using some homemade ramps off the back of a flatbed trailer using a come-along and pushing it...inch by inch.

I have to say, by the time we got done, I hurt all over from my neck to my knees! But the ramps worked, and I'm proud of that because I made them! They were made from 2x6s. That bug came down two ramps that were six inches wide.

I'm ridiculously proud. I'll post pictures after while.

How do ya do that? Any ideas for sites that might have instructions?

Yer basic "Home Depot" type box store will have what ya need. But g'nad's right. Read up on it a bit.

And remember that textured paint can cover a multitude of sins (you still have to tape and mud first though...)

You are learning the lesson I learned when we bought the house. Always plan twice as long and twice as much $$ as a job would "normally" take.

So...am I confused in thinking that I could just put on the primer and then paint? Is that what I'm hearing?

Please don't tell me this is another whole project...I can't afford anything more.

Gah...I'm feeling all shaky now. I thought I was almost there.

It really depends. And don't panic, 'cause the stuff really isn't that spendy.

How exposed is your dry wall? If it's smoothed over and just not painted, then you're right, all you have to do is prime it.

But if you've got seams showing, you need to cover those.

Wish I could help you out, Rosie, but I'm clueless about home improvement...

Why didn't the house-builders actually finish the drywall over? Even if you're putting up wallpaper shouldn't that have been taken care of?
