It's high time we addressed a growing concern in the restaurant industry: portion sizes and the rise of "Fat-flation."

It's high time we addressed a growing concern in the restaurant industry: portion sizes and the rise of "Fat-flation."

Somewhere along the line in American culinary history, the amount of food served in restaurants became a point of pride for many of us. We'd either polish off every last morsel on our plates, take home leftovers, or sadly, let them languish in the fridge for days before tossing them out. What a waste.

After four decades of Americans packing on the pounds, and all the health issues that come with it, it's clear we need a change. Both restaurants and diners could benefit from the option of smaller portions. To level the playing field for restaurants, they could offer half-sized servings for a 40% discount. This not only makes dining out more affordable but also helps trim our waistlines.

As alarming as the obesity epidemic is, what's equally shocking is the amount of food we waste. Think about it: all that food had to be grown, watered, fertilized, harvested, transported, and transformed into delicious meals, only to end up in the trash. It's a travesty.

Addressing this issue isn't just about our health—it's about the environment too. Think about the impact of all that wasted food on our planet.

So, let's make a change. Let's start valuing food for what it is: a precious resource. By embracing smaller portions and cutting down on waste, we can make a real difference—for our health, our wallets, and our planet. It's time to stop the Fat-flation and start appreciating every bite.

Who's "we", Kemosabe?

The restaurant put too much food on your plate? Rejoice! Ask for a box, which they will happily supply, and take half of it home for lunch.

And kwitcherbitchin'!!!

I think I really admire your grandma.

I would not eat out if I did not know I would get at least 2 often 3 meals out of my lunch or dinner serving.

The obesity crisis started when fed driven scientists started sounding the alarm that sunshine causes cancer and we should slather on sunscreen and hide inside (a later covid advise, as well). Take away our vitamin D and we become fat, sickly, and stupid...no matter how much or how little we eat.

The little Coppertone girl with the puppy-exposed tan lines knew exactly what health was all about - the SUN!

Tell you what, John. You order what you want, eat it or don’t, I don’t care as long as I’m not paying for it. If you were my guest, I wouldn’t care even then.

As for me, what I order and whether I eat it is none of your damned business if I’m paying the bill.

Most diners have a “Seniors” menu as well as a children’s menu with smaller sizes.

Most fast food joints have smaller portions in the in value menu. Wendy’s Value burger is half the size of the smallest burger you could get at a Wendy’s in 1975. The Whopper was once 1/3 pound, and is now slimmed down to 1/4 pound.

The one big difference between then and now is the “all you can drink” fountain soft drinks. The better discipline is to opt for unsweetened iced tea as your beverage.

If there is a fixed cost to the restaurant for seating, service, utilities, taxes, rent, then it makes sense to make larger portions a better value, even if the patron takes a doggy bag home.

The supermarkets promote 7 oz cans of soda, 100 calorie version of snack cakes and chips, and they cost a LOT more per ounce, and don’t appear to sell all that well.

Lunchables fill this guy’s bill, but they are overpriced junk, too.

“To level the playing field for restaurants, they could offer half-sized servings for a 40% discount.”

This demonstrates huge ignorance. The eatery goes broke quickly. Food is a minor cost in the restaurant biz. Smaller portions barely change the overhead for the restaurant.

"So you are saying the Coppertone ad isn’t a sunscreen ad ?"

Is that really all you took from that post? In the 1940's, Coppertone was advertised to darken and quicken a tan, while still protecting the skin. I believe it's said that the results of their product would have amounted to an SPF of 6 today, regardless of whatever they added to enhance the tan...so, yes, you are correct. It was a sunscreen. Thanks for pointing that out.

Today's sunscreen, however, amounts to lead lining the body. We are a planet that exists because of the sun and survive by and with the benefits of the sun...

Who let a preteen girl author this silliness?

Is John Guinivere Her super-secret pen name?

I'm surprised it didn't start off with "People!, listen up People!

Like what happens in Grade School.

Sounds like the kind of consultant you send to your competition.

Step 1 - cut the portions you serve in half.

Step 2 - customers expect the price to fall since they are now getting 1/2 as much food.

Step 3 - Realize that your overall number of customers has remained the same, but your revenue is about 1/2 of what it used to be.

Step 4 - Call your landlord and tell them you can't pay the rent this month.

Step 4 - Start looking in the phone book under "Bankruptcy Attorney"

Exactly. This "consultant" is the person you recommend to the competitor you really don't like.

If a restaurant's revenue drops by 40% with the same number of customers they are going to be bankrupt as soon as they burn through their cash reserves - if they have any.

It's not easy to get a landlord to take 40% less rent, and to get the employees to take a 40% pay cut.

The food is probably one of the smaller line items for a restaurant. Labor, rent, energy, insurance, furnishing, etc. are all big. Tossing in an extra half cup of pasta or a couple ounces of ground beef is cheap and requires no extra labor to produce or clean up after.

The government’s new *food pyramid, that is very carb heavy, sure didn’t help either.

Carbs cause a lot of people to pack on weight.

Of course, screen time sure plays into that. Eat real food, and get off your butt and obesity won’t be nearly the problem.
