Now that Episodes 1-3 of Season 4 have been in theaters for ONE week and has held a SOLID #2 Nationwide position for Theatrical releases for the past 7 days -RAW theatrical revenue Data here: https://www.boxofficemojo.com/releasegroup/gr4002566661/?ref_=bo_rl_su

As of this posting: $10,317,554 (Worldwide for just episodes 1-3)

With episodes 4,5,6 to be released in theaters on 15 February 2024 it is time to talk through Episodes 1-3

I am particularly interested in what FReeper chosen fans or chosen haters have to say about the NON-Biblical atory lines playing out in the series.

Love or hate them I think it is important to discuss and opine if you think the “extra-Biblical” storylines which make the entire series fun to watch in my opinion.

Do these storylines make you question what is Bible TRUTH or are you able to easily follow the show mentally separating what is Bible TRUTH and what is Artistic Liberty/License in creating characters, narratives, conversations events that are plausible but certainly not Divinely inspired scripture.

Short answer the close friendship between Andrew and John the Baptist I believe is historically accurate. I believe most scholars would agree that Andrew was one of “creepy John’s” earliest students

I love how The Chosen “Simon/Peter” coined the phrase “Creepy John”

Somehow I doubt Peter thought John the Baptist was “creepy”. That sort of thing is why I quit watching after season one. NOTHING in scripture indicates people thought John the Baptist was anything other than a great prophet. Even Herod was impressed by him!

Seen in the light of the Old Testament and given how thousands flocked to hear him, I don’t believe ANY friend of Jesus would call John creepy.

Sorry, but at the time Simon Peter used the word creepy was while he was just a poor fisherman, who in trouble with the Roman officials. So it is plausible. I don't even think the word creepy had been coined back then.

Besides the whole roman tax issue for him and Andrew is jus a plausible part of the entertainment value. It's getting millions to read the Truth, The Bible.

lol

I think the term “creepy” is a modern America term that would never have been used in that time period. So don’t read too much into it.

I have no idea what a Hebrew or Greek word from the first century would in a single word define a person who lives in wilderness eating bugs and proclaiming “Prepare Ye the way of the Lord” The Messiah is HERE and I have been sent to proclaim liberty and call out the sin and “correct” the misunderstanding of political and religious leaders -

If there is/was such a word in 1st century Hebrew, Aramaic or Greek I would think “creepy” might be a plausible modern day English translation of that word

I’m wondering if Atticus will be a believer .
He’s very fact driven and observant.
But also a ruthless servant of Rome.

Any enthusiasm I had for this series died early on when Jesus, thoroughly confused, thought he had told his disciples to meet him in one place when he’d really told them to meet him at another. Oops, King of the Universe fouled up. The nail in the coffin was him rehearsing for the Sermon on the Mount, like a stage play spectacular, with Matthew correcting how he should actually be preaching and Jesus saying, ‘hey, yeah! Why didn’t I think of that?’

Sorry...bad news, all the way around. Run.

“Snail’s Pace” is what 7 seasons - 50+ episodes of TV are made of.

Think about any long running TV show - you can miss a whole year and get “caught up in a day of binge watching” — and in Soap Operas rhe writers are not bound to making the show historical fiction - and making. The main characters existence and fate Biblically Accurate to the extent possible.

Thomas dies a martyr in India. So I really didn’t know how they were going to fit in a married Thomas. I love the Eden character and I don’t know what they are going to do with her either.

Again, if you are looking for entertainment- historical fiction then these ChosenISMS should be of little to no concern - a funny “Jesus Joke” makes great entertainment—. Anyone watching including the characters in the show reacting to Jesus comment “I didn’t see that coming” a key plausibility that Jesus actually can make “joke” in his humanity —. Without always having to remind everyone around him that HE in HIS Deity actually knows every thought and deed of every person who ever lived or will live - to include the exact number of hairs on your head and that nothing is outside of His power - yet He perfectly executes the Will of HIS FATHER in every word and deed —. To include jokes with his close friends.

Anyone who thinks that Jesus was not allowed to have a “sense of humor” because of his Deity —. Just may be missing a key aspect of His perfect humanity.

“If there is/was such a word in 1st century Hebrew, Aramaic or Greek I would think “creepy” might be a plausible modern day English translation of that word”

No. It wouldn’t because A) eating bugs and honey in the desert isn’t too uncommon among desert people and B) they had a long tradition of great prophets acting different from other people. John’s birth had also had miraculous signs indicating he would be an important prophet. Herod listened to John even though John was rebuking him.

We KNOW how John was viewed:

“As they departed, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. For this is he of whom it is written:

‘ Behold, I send My messenger before Your face,
Who will prepare Your way before You.’” - Matt 11

“On the following day John was again standing with two of his disciples. He looked straight at Jesus as he walked along, and said, “There is the lamb of God!”

37-38 The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. Then Jesus turned round and when he saw them following him, spoke to them. “What do you want?” he said. “Master, where are you staying?” they replied.

39-41 “Come and see,” returned Jesus...One of the two men who had heard what John said and had followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He went straight off and found his own brother, Simon, and told him, “We have found the Messiah!” (meaning, of course, Christ).” - John 1

Not a HINT that Peter or Andrew thought John the Baptist was weird. On the contrary, we know Andrew was a disciple of John and Peter probably heard about what John the Baptist said about Jesus before Peter went to Jesus.

And THIS is precisely the type of conversations that this show is encouraging!

Great analysis - as a fan of the chosen I still think the creepy John line is brilliantly funny.

If for no other reason many people will read your analysis and still find the line brilliantly funny.
