SACRAMENTO, Calif. (TND) — Two major California Democrats are siding with Republicans on a new initiative to raise penalties for theft, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
The campaign reportedly takes aim at Proposition 47, a controversial law that in 2014 reduced punishments for drug possession throughout the state and reclassified theft of items worth $950 or less from a felony to a misdemeanor. In 2022, a bill that sought to lower this threshold to $450 failed in the California State Legislature, but some of the law’s fiercest supporters now appear to have changed their tune.
Democratic San Francisco Mayor London Breed told the publication the subsequent widespread theft has begun to harm the city. The move comes as Breed is seeking reelection and facing mounting pressure from constituents to curb crime in the city.

The moves from the Democrats come as major retailers like Macy’s, Walmart and Target pull store locations throughout the state over rampant shoplifting concerns.
Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom, however, seemingly remains unconvinced. At a news conference last month, he noted $950 is one of the lowest felony theft thresholds in the nation.

For the record, FReepers commented in the past how destructive the change would be from raising the threshold for petty theft from $400 to $950. It was an easy prediction. The cost in dollars and jobs lost has run into the millions of dollars.
A diagnosis of pancreatic cancer has a better outlook than when you reach that moment that even democrats side with republicans on something like this.
Need reform?
Funny, it was the Dems “reform” that brought this about to begin with.
What you do is wait until the democrats vote for it entirely. At least 51% of them. I wouldn’t give them a break for the right thing.
I’m absolutely surprised that they even admitted that there’s a problem.
I would label it as eating their own vomit instead of reform.
Na. What is really needed is a law that forces states attorneys and district attorneys to prosecute all cases according to state law. Failure to do so should be a class 1 felony offense punishable by 10 years in prision per each count. Leaving enforcement to the whim of an elected official is a the first step on the path to a politicized judicial system. Going after the criminals anso includes statesand district attorneys and malcreant judges. Penalties for perversion of justice by government official needs to be not only severe but sure.
Only two.
EXACTLY!
One of the principles this country was founded on was equal justice for all. It's part of being a nation governed by the rule of law.
We MUST get back to that with justice being done for the crime, not the sex, religion, skin color, class, or immigration status.
Meanwhile, NYS recently closed six prisons.
And is now taking about closing 5 more in addition.
It sounds like ‘Fornica is polishing the turd that is Newsom.
Must be an election year
“he noted $950 is one of the lowest felony theft thresholds in the nation.”
That’s not the problem, Gov Greaseball. The problem is it isn’t even being prosecuted as a misdemeanor or a ticketable citation. It’s just waved on as nothing. No consequence.
EC
So they want to reform the last reform which reformed the reform before it after reforming the previous reform messes they reformed.
I should go into the reform business. Government people have an insatiable appetite for it. I’ll get rich selling it.
Yes, an election year, which means it’s all talk.
Exactly! And people who try to stop thieves get fired.
so has cali closed prisons
