Life tests our character and we are both the ant and grasshopper from Aesop’s fable. We both prepare and we procrastinate. We face a similar choice when it comes to protecting our children at school. Some of us planned and prepared ahead of time to protect our children, and some of us put that off for another day. What is worse is that some unprepared adults will blame the next mass murder at school on the citizens who took steps to protect their children from harm. Fortunately for all of us we know how to stop mass murder in our schools. That wasn’t always true. Defending our children at school was both a discovery and an invention. I’ve studied school safety for the last decade and this is some of what we’ve learned.
Mass murder is designed to shocks us, yet most of us ignore why these murderers kill our kids. Fewer of us act to take away the murderer’s motivation. Only a few of us work to put an effective defense in our schools. Mass murder strikes at all of our hearts, but a dedicated handful of people worked for years to make our children safer. It was hard work. It remains hard work.
Comparing mass murder to a natural disaster, it is easier to write detailed fire codes and seismic requirements for our schools than to admit that some people who look like us will deliberately hurt our children. Mass murder makes us feel helpless. We have to look evil in the face and not flinch. The good news is that we know exactly what to do to stop the next mass murderer in his tracks.

He is correct in stating the motive for these mass murders. It is to become a "celebrity murderer".
He gives a good prescription of how to stop most of them.
Informative article. Thanks for posting.

Brilliant!
Very interesting article, thanks.
I would add to it that anyone who kills in a school environment, whether one death or many, should be convicted of murder in the first degree, given the death sentence and buried in an un marked grave.....with not one word in the local news or TV throughout the entire process. Just disappeared.
FTA: “The psychological temptation is to add more and more qualifications on armed school staff. That ignores that each restrictive requirement means another disarmed staff member at school.”
I’d argue it’s more than just psychological — it’s the nature of the “control beast” that lurks in legislators and school board members alike. Best evidence: COVID. I’ve seen this over-qualification process raise its head in the current regulations in my own state.
Yes, very good article. Another source to explain from another angle is “Why Meadow Died” “by Andrew Pollack — whose daughter Meadow perished in the shooting — and education-policy expert Max Eden explain in detail the many warning signs the shooter had given off since his childhood. They leave no doubt that if the county had had sensible policies in place and even minimally competent employees, the shooting would not have happened…”
This country murders around 800,000 babies every year so why aren’t we worried about this along with other mass murders?
What do you mean by "we" there? I talked my folks out of talking my baby sister into having her baby aborted. My wife and I would have adopted her baby if she hadn't decided to keep the baby. And guess who grew up to be the favorite grandchild? You paint with a rather broad brush.
Wait at the RR crossing, when the bus stops and opens the doors per the rules, law or whatever it is that makes bus drivers do this, then Step in. Watch Dirty Harry to see what would likely happen to the interior of the bus.
This country is very ill prepared against real terrorists. PERIOD. How many school buses daily? I am thinking more than there were flights hijacked on 9/11. A LOT more.
Then there is this idiotic drivel
“Consider the problem of providing an armed officer at school. Not only do you need an armed officer only seconds away from each student, but you have to be there whenever students are present.”
No you don’t, just arm the teachers, train them to conceal carry, how to shoot, and when. It is the best deterrence and defense possible.
If you read the article, that is precisely what Rob Morse advocates.
Unfortunately folks like you are a minority. I should have been more specific about who the “we” involved. The “we” I referred to are those referred to in the article who pontificate about murdering children by saying “We have to look evil in the face and not flinch.” and yet ignore the murdering of babies.
