If the police are to be granted a “mulligan”, that suggests they can be held to a lesser standard of responsibility. If I had done something similar to her act, I don’t think anyone would be surprised at my conviction.
Kim Potter is an imbecile. Most female cops are trash. Someone did a piece a few years back about the number of female police/supervisors involved in errant or mistaken fatal shootings/killings. It was shockingly high.
I am certainly not celebrating her conviction.
The part that had me scratching my head was how this officer who had been on the job for all those years had never actually drawn and fired her taser. Even in training.
I personally know several cops, in my family. They get weapons refresher training every year. They have to qualify with their weapons…every year. They are tased at least once during their initial training. They are put through stress inducing weapons training during their academy and every couple of rotations through weapons qualifications.
The lack of training is probably not her fault. But it certainly contributed to her plight. I hope the judge is not a jerk during sentencing.
Tragic and deadly mistakes put people in jail all the time. That’s what crimes like “negligent homicide” and “involuntary manslaughter” are for. It is actually criminal to accidentally kill somebody.
1. Maybe the jury didn't believe the dingbat cop's story.
2. Maybe the jury decided that they would hold an armed officer of the law to a higher standard than a doctor or an airline pilot when it comes to assessing cases of potential criminal conduct.
Potter could have shot Daunte six times in the head and then lit his body on fire, and I would still say she deserves a pass.
“If rehabilitation is the goal, does someone like Potter learn her lesson that the accidental taking of life already hasn’t?”
That is a good question. Is the purpose of the prison system to punish, rehabilitate or somewhere in-between?
If to rehabilitate, putting her in prison for being incompetent at her job is pointless.
If to punish, putting her in prison for removing a thug from society makes no sense.
For those who say, “well, if I had done that,” it is not your job to confront and detain these criminals so, yeah, you would be treated differently.
Nope, I’m sorry stupid should hurt.
Alec Baldwin will probably face no charges.
Nor will they ever be.
I have Potter to thank for that.
Celebrate? No. I also don’t celebrate water being wet.
Someone did something wrong and they were convicted and sentenced.
A policeman is not the same as a surgeon, a doctor, or whatever other kind of conflation people want to throw at it.
There is a large difference between “Oh crap, my scalpel nicked an artery while I’m doing this extremely dangerous procedure in a wet, slippery, cramped environment that moves, while trying to save this persons life.” and “I grabbed the kill stick instead of the zap stick while trying to get someone out of a car.”
Her crime? Being WHITE while conducting police work.
Mistake? Sure. But that in no way alters responsibility or accountability for the consequences of a mistake. Rather amazing that this is even being debated.
I like it. Sums up Daunte’s death quite nicely.
Providing actual Street Justice often comes with a significant price.
A POS perp is dead and an idiot is in prison where she can’t do harm to an innocent person. Looks like a win-win to me.
At the end of the day only one thing matters, regardless of what montag813 wants to say. On a side note, any time he/she/it wants to attend some scenario based training or take a job with the local PD/Sheriff’s office, that call all be arranged so he/she/it can show the world how it’s done.
That being said, only one thing matters.....
Kim Potter...white female of diminutive size...Potter was a25yr vetern, field training officer with no disciplinary issues....was struggling with a wanted felon who was fighting with police in an attempt to evade arrest....a convicted felon....a BLACK MAN....who, if he had been able to get control of that vehicle, would have stopped at nothing in his attempt to get away, even if that meant running innocent people over or destroying property.....Potter mistakenly grabbed the wrong piece of issued equipment and ended the situation....she’s now looking at 25 years in prison
Lt Michael Byrd....a seemingly large BLACK MALE...with numerous disciplinary issues....shot and killed a 5’-nothing WHITE female....Veteran.....unarmed....doing nothing more than climbing through a window.....she was not fighting with Lt Michael Byrd....Lt Michael Byrd is being held up as a hero....Lt Michael Byrd is considered a hero by Congress and its staff.

Justice!!!!!
The premise that accidents are not considered crimes is a canard
What nonsense…
She killed someone, yes she did so accidentally, but to claim killings someone accidentally has no criminal culpability is beyond moronic.
Every person killed by a drunk driver was killed accidentally… does that mean Drunk Drivers have no criminal culpability?
This article is absolute trash.
I don’t celebrate the verdict, this entire thing is a tragedy… but to try to argue that a police officer has no legal culpability when they screw up is absolute nonsense.
You don’t get an immunity pass for all of your actions just because you are a police officer, nor should you.
This attempt to say because the person killed wasn’t a nice guy, then this officers actions are okay are just as stupid.
This is a garbage article written by an idiot. If you seriously believe a police officer should have blanket immunity for actions they take as part of their job, you are advocating for a tyrannical state.
