California: When You've Lost Gene Simmons...
Powerline Blog ^ | 10/24/2020 | Steven Hayward

After a certain point it becomes wanton cruelty to keep dunking on California’s slow motion suicide, but some stories are too good to pass unremarked. Today’s Wall Street Journal reports that rocker Gene Simmons is KISS-ing California goodbye and moving to no-income tax Washington state, and in high KISS-my-ass style:

[Simmons] is now putting the property, which they later redeveloped into a sprawling European-style mansion, on the market for $22 million. The reason: They are moving to a 24-acre estate in Washington, near Mount Rainier, to escape the tax burden of living in California, Mr. Simmons said.

“California and Beverly Hills have been treating folks that create jobs badly and the tax rates are unacceptable,” he said. “I work hard and pay my taxes and I don’t want to cry the Beverly Hills blues but enough is enough.”

But California won’t be the same without him. How can such a person be replaced:

Incidentally, if Joe Biden wins and his tax plans are enacted, California’s combined state-federal marginal income tax rate will be 62 percent for high earners—a higher rate than in the days before the Reagan tax cuts of 1981. Back to the future indeed!

There are a lot of people there who have politics who match ours. In fact, I find anecdotally, and I’ve even heard of actual studies that have shown, that most of the people who move to conservative areas are conservative. I’m from New York City. Most of the native southerners around me are total and complete liberals compared to me. I teach people around me, natives included, how to be conservative.

To each his own. I’m no big fan of humidity either, but I can’t deal with the cold ocean, gloomy fog burning off all the time when it should be sunny, and the effing liberals that people have allowed to have unfettered power there.

We have problems here too, but all things considered, I’ll take ours.

Gene Simmons is a Christian.

Before the lovely Freeperette passed away, she and I exchanged quite a few private messages and a few phone calls about various topics She was a close friend of Gene Simmons.

I loved Hilton Head and that whole area. I could retire there but wondering - how buggy does it get?
I’m so sick of the northeast bug season, last spring Walden pond was infested. I left for Arizona for a few and could finally breathe easy.

We westerners don’t adapt well to the oppressive humidity. When it’s above 60 degrees, the humidity needs to be below 20% or we melt and die.

That's because mossbacks are sissies.

South Carolina may have a lot going for it, but it does not have world class skiing/boarding, world class wine regionS or the Sierra Nevada's. If your an "outdoors" person, CA has far more options going for it.

CA just needs to go back to it's more conservative leaning roots and the entire country will be better off for it.

That’s funny. Went on business trip to Dallas one winter. Arrived at airport midnight. There was one inch of snow
They shut entire airport down. Only way out I found a cab driver from PA who could drive in snow. Entire city shut down
No food or maid service at hotel for a week!
