Comfortably retired bloke here. I was thinking of offering some big bucks to the winner of a speech contest where the winner gives the best 5-10 minute speech on the virtues of capitalism. Time to get the young folks engaged rather than indoctrinated. If one young student has to spend a whole weekend studying and preparing for a (let's say) $500 reward it will at least get them off their dead behinds. I'd even throw in a participation trophy for the losers. Local GOP offices could sponsor the events. That would really fry the left. Just askin'.
What would the local school board think? Heaven forbid what about Greta?
Teach each and every one of them to sing this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxnBSb4OKeU
It’s seed money. Private. All we need is a forum. Might even have to be done in a privately owned building. Who has the gonads to offer theirs?
How did I teach my young kids about tax and forced socialism? When they had a piece of cake or ice cream, I would take half, and call it “tax.”
When they complained, I would say: “sorry, I’m in charge, and you don’t have a choice.”
I would then claim: “Who doesn’t have any? me!” and eat that half.
I only needed to do it a few times for the lesson to be learned forever.
Capitalism really is a virtuous construct but is often conflated with Wall St. capitalism which is not capitalism but rather rigged theft of capital markets.
Basic capitalism is a gathering of people forming a pact to bring labor, resources, equipment to produce a surplus of what they need in order to trade for other things they need but did not produce. This creates a rich stable society
If capitalists not only produce more than they need (profit) while trading to satisfy all their needs (stability), and still have a surplus to trade for things that are attractive and/or meaningful, this extends their stability past a rich society to a society of wealth.
Capitalism thus fosters an environment for pursuing wealth and abundance.
various right to life chapters in Texas have had some success with this model, as has national right to life
Do it!!!!!!
It’s not that difficult
pick a topic (which you’ve done), fund the prize money, get 3 or 4 truly esteemed local judges (in this case, business people who care about capitalism), find a venue and knock out the event on a Saturday morning, 9 to noon
I’d suggest the winner should get 1000 instead of 500
Probably you could raise that instantly here at FR if you put together a credible plan
I only needed to do it a few times for the lesson to be learned forever.”
lol
LET THEM EAT CAKE!!!!!
you could force a public library to host this
If you’re good for the $$ and willing to hold the event in Okaloosa County, FL, I think I can help you find a venue and a sponsoring organization.
give the top 3 or 5 or so a copy of
The Science of Success by Charles Koch
It’s a very accessible, succinct statement of exactly what they need to know
I could afford $1k and be very happy about it. I just don’t have the expertise at putting this together. 2020 would be a very good year to do it. 1968 all over again.
you DO have the expertise, I promise
get the ball rolling by asking a few business people to sere as judges
maybe make it not so political (ie, don’t get the GOP involved)
once you get a small team, your collective life experiences will help you put it together
what state are you in?
The local GOP chapters should sponsor and put their stamps on it. Unfortunately they want money for RINOs. It was the university Affirmative Action Bake Sales that got me started on this idea.
i may do this myself....you got me thinking... :)
Add a second contest on the Global Warming farce.
Young people know even less about basic math, basic engineering, and basic science than they know about economics and history.
I’ve taught speech and English for over a decade and Ayn Rand’s Association not only gives out huge amounts of Anthem, the Fountainhead, and Atlas Shrugs for free, but also sponsors essay contests for several thousand dollars of scholarship money. Also there are good speech contests from FFA, VFW, and the like that also may touch on patriotism/capitalism.
The problem with many foundations (like the Ford Foundation) is that pro-capitalist orgs. inevitably get intertwined with public money and then float into centrist, and then leftist territory.
great idea ... ya might consider changing the word “capitalism” to “free enterprise”.
Atlas Shrugged would be good assigned reading during Easter vacation. Interview them in groups on Easter Sunday to verify they’ve read it. Available on kindle. We’d have to figure out the reward beforehand.
Gotta go my friends. Hoping this thread gets something started. Conservative-you are now the go to guy. I’m just a disturber of the excrement and DJT is the John McEnroe national temper tantrum. It’s all about 2020. Gonna be great.
