The Fort Worth, Texas, police officer who fatally shot a woman while she was babysitting her nephew over the weekend has been charged with murder.

Aaron Dean was booked into the Tarrant County Correction Center and later released on $200,000 bond, according to jail officials.

Fort Worth Police Sgt. Chris Daniels acknowledged the outrage that the killing of Atatiana Jefferson, 28, had sparked.

She should not have had a gun. Certainly should not have pointed it at a cop.

so you are against private gun ownership? And she was (possibly) pointing it at an unidentified prowler outside her window.

Based on the details so far (and assuming they are true) I don’t think this is murder. Reckless homicide or involuntary manslaughter at best.

Have you ever had firearms safety courses and training? Been taught the proper techniques to defend yourself and your home if necessary?

It’s clear to me that Auntie had no such training. She was not prepared to correctly use that weapon. She brandished it at an unknown target. First mistake. If you or I were to do that, then we better just shoot. Because if we don’t - that target will likely shoot back.

Which is what happened.

So because in your opinion someone did not have situational awareness of what was happening in her backyard at 2 am in the morning, they should not be armed for self defense? By the way, how do you know she pointed the gun at all? When I am inside my home with lights on and its dark outside, its pretty damn near impossible to see whats outside. I don’t know what she thought or saw anymore than you, but the officer gave no time from when he identified his ‘target’ to pulling the trigger for the victim to identify him as a cop.

They were sent on a health and welfare check. For a health and welfare check it is assumed that the resident is home but may be incapacitated or need assistance.

This was not a no knock raid. The police had an obligation to identify themselves when they got there, not skulk around in the dark and then only identify themselves as they were pulling the trigger to murder the resident.

Do you know how many people own firearms but are not trained in self defense with them? I refer back to my previous post to you. I believe in good training, but the 2nd amendment does not list a prerequisite for having arms to defend oneself.

“Where in hell did you get this that ‘they go up in someone’s home’?
They were not in the person’s home but on the outside checking.”

Sorry I’m sounding like Tommy when I say that. He was outside the house, late at night with a flashlight looking in the windows. He didn’t say he was the police. Now if it was you in that situation what would you think? I would think someone is trying to break in my home. When police officers are around your home after dark with a flash light they suppose to say “HELLO ANYONE HOME? POLICE DEPARTMENT!” but when they say nothing like this dude did that is wrong he did not announce who he was. He knew better that is not how he was trained at the academy.

She had a carry permit.

Do you suppose that she acquired that with no training?

The police officer also brandished his weapon at an unknown target, and he fired it.

It’s clear to me that he had no such training.

He also never identified himself, and was no different than a prowler.

It's on video. And the 8 year old said she did. From the get go - this has been a fact.

She had a gun for "self defense". My point is that no one ever told her that self defense begins with keeping your door and windows closed at 2:30 am when living in a bad neighborhood.

You're making an assumption. Yes the 911 call was for a welfare check, but did the two cops get that message? Apparently not. Both of them treated the scene as a possible burglary. And acted appropriately.

That’s funny

In the late 80s I lived in Coral Gables

I used to drive my Bahamian housekeeper home at nite and pick her up mornings to a serious hood back then near Coconut Grove ....

In my Ford dually with a big confederate battle flag on the front plate and Mississippi tags

I’d get out and make sure she got in safe and talk to the locals and even get some of her meat patties which were perfect if she had some in the fridge

Rosie...a fine woman black as ink...my kids still talk about her RIP

Around that same time the Costa Rican consuls wife was shot and killed close to there in an early car jacking attempt

And even stranger..I can still go into the darkest parts of the Mississippi delta and do that ...Talking areas 98% black

I was in Tchula a few years ago on a late Friday nite helping a drunk black man out of the middle of US 49 where he was napping

I was in a sea of blacks..100s on a Friday nite in the dusty parking lot of a juke joint

Big crew can with my wife and 3 sons....southern flag on front...my wife was terrified

My oldest and I got him off the road and went in juke joint Gas station And bought fried chicken cause I knew it would be perfect and it was

Talked ducks with the crowd and dropped a few names of locals I use to know and left

But I wouldn’t try it in Baltimore

They were called by a neighbor fearing something maybe wrong
at his neighbors house. They parked away from the house and
was trying to check to see what was going on, if some crime was
going on, etc. They didn’t come up sirens blasting but parked
away so as not to disturb anyone committing criminal acts.

"the media want the most important factor throughout this horrible story to be the woman’s color."

Exactly. What does color have to do with it? This was a gung-ho screwball cop who wanted to kill something. The color of the victim was irrelevant.

If people wonder why race relations are inflamed, look no further than the media who make their bread and butter by inflaming racial tensions.

No argument from me here. But IF Auntie had training. IF Auntie had that situational awareness I keep talking about - she may still be alive.

I wish she would have just shot out the window at whatever was in the bushes. The Castle Doctrine would have backed her up.

“ Playing video games at 2:30am with an eight year old and the front door open? Really?”

Of course that merits being shot to death by a cop when no crime had been committed.
