Really, I don't know how one could have any degree of objectivity when it comes to ranking our top soldiers. Too many variables. But it makes for a fascinating debate topic.

If you had to sit down with a pencil and paper and come up with who you think is the best soldier in American history, who would you choose?

Definitely Q.

For me it’s pretty easy to answer. George Washington. Without him we wouldn’t have a country. He was indispensable to the cause.

How could a viable Figure of Merit possibly be developed to answer that question, given the millions under evaluation?

Even Washington has his issues.

Washington was one-of-a-kind to be sure. Would we be able to trust any of our modern generals with essentially the opportunity to become king? I don’t think it would have turned out the same. Washington had some serious obstacles to overcome, but how can we be sure that say, a Matthew Ridgway couldn’t have accomplished the same in Washington’s shoes if given the opportunity?

They sure gave Alvin York a mighty fine movie adaption ... probably would have had him turning beet red from all the attention.

I think I would personally choose Chesty Puller as soldier.

Best General?

A brilliant British General, actually Field Marshall, Viscount Garnet Wolseley considered Robert E. Lee to not only be the best general but the best man he ever knew.

People for some reason like to denigrate Douglas MacArthur but he was truly brilliant. Patton had all the right instincts. Stonewall Jackson too.

Goodness there have been a lot.

Pretty difficult to beat Washington, as others have said, with him there would be no Americans. Other contenders (IMHO):

Eisenhower

Patton

Pershing

Nimitz

If we at to count Confederates:

Lee and Jackson

Not on my list:

Grant -- His strength was a deep bench

MacArthur -- Because of North Korea

Sherman -- His March to the Sea made him a War Criminal

I can’t recall who he was right now but the German general who used the blitzkrieg in France had to be smart. Heinrici was a true defensive genius.

Of course they weren’t Americans.

York and Murphy. For certain neither one would give a damn who was chosen.
