I have a friend. More like a brother really. Larger than life, he was a true a friend, as fine a man and as thoroughly an American as any you will ever find. Hard working, hard drinking (sometimes), he loved his family, and his neighbors.
We had a family business, and Rick worked for us. But he was more, much more than that. He got me out of scrapes at times, and he could rip me a new one, if it was warranted. Overall, he believed in doing an honest days work for an honest day's wages. He worked hard, knew a little about a lot, and boy, could he whip out the words. He had a sense of humor, homespun, that was second to none. He could weave a story that would literally leave you in pain from laughing.
He was a great man, in every sense of the word, and for some reason, he took his life yesterday. If you could see the tears running down my face as I type this, you would get a small sense of my grief.
Godspeed, Rick. You were one of the best.

I’ve heard of a lot of shocking suicides lately.
Do you know what may have depressed or pained him?

OMG...I’m so sorry for your pain :-(
I have had three great friends in my life, Marshall, Denny and Rick.
Denny passed a while back from prostate cancer because his VA care was woefully inadequate.
I think of him often...thank God I still have the other two.
I hope I go before they do as I don’t think I could handle losing them.
I’m so sorry for your loss. I lost my dad to suicide and it left a trench on my heart. Prayers up for his family.

Often times, we never know the depth of suffering that goes on inside some of our closest friends. Heartbreaking. I pray that God comforts you and his family.
I’m sorry about your friend. How can someone that is so funny and make others laugh have such a hard time with their own life? What made him so depressed? Relationships?

words are inefficient. The question will always remain. WHY? What could I have done to seek an alternative outcome, seen the signs?
You work through the loss and continue on. It’s not easy but with time memories do realign. My best to you and so sorry for your loss. Know somewhat how you must feel, my brother did the same about 15 years ago.
I lost my childhood’s best friend to suicide.
What got him to that point was a life of untreated alcoholism. It’s been twenty years and I still think of him almost daily.

Thanks everyone. Your words are very helpful. No one at this point knows why. We may never know. He did lose his wife to cancer a couple of years back. Maybe he never got over the grief. Nothing showed outwardly. Thanks again. And if you pray, all prayers would be appreciated.
Wow, that is sad. Sometimes things just don’t make sense. Sorry for the loss and shock you are dealing with.
