One way of envisioning the Democratic obsessions with Donald Trump is as an addiction. We have seen the initial impeachment efforts; the attempt to get him under the emoluments clause, the Logan Act and the 25th Amendment; the Russian collusion hoax; the Mueller investigation; the demand for his tax returns; and the psychodramas involving Michael Avenatti, Michael Cohen and Stormy Daniels. Relentless progressives have needed a new Get Trump fix about every two months.

More practically, their fixation also substitutes for a collective poverty of ideas. The Democratic Party has no plan to secure the borders other than to be against whatever Trump is for. They would not build a wall, deport illegal entrants, end sanctuary cities, fine employers or do much of anything but allow almost anyone to enter the U.S.

This is an excellent analogy.

Mad Ahab had one singular fixation: Revenge upon the White Whale!

AND MAD AHAB HAD ONE SINGULAR OBJECTIVE: TO DESTROY THE WHITE WHALE!

To this he subordinated everything. He followed the Whale throughout the earth, seeking to destroy him. Ultimately he destroyed the entire ship, himself, and all the crew, save Ishmael, who lived to tell the tale.

The Whale--of course--after destroying Ahab and his crew, lived on!

And remember, in his ultimate madness, as he forged his deadly harpoon to kill the Whale once and for all, this was Mad Ahab:

What a fitting citation for the Party of slavery, infanticide, racism, lynching, voter fraud, abortion, coup d'état, the Trail of Tears, illegal immigration, HATE and EVIL!

Ahab's was a classic tragedy, his fatal flaw hubris and denial.

The tawdry conspirators who attempted a coup d'état in the USA certainly do not rise to the level of heroic tragedy--far from it--but certainly among their many flaws are hubris and denial.
