First of all, the Disney version of Cinderella was based on the Charles Perrault version, NOT the Grimm version, so they didn’t change that bit (if anything, either Perrault or Grimm did). All Disney did there was adapt one version of the story.
Second of all, showing extremely gory stuff to kids isn’t exactly going to be good for them in the long run. I once saw the ending of Raiders of the Lost Ark when I was very young, and that ultimately screwed up my view of God, making me think of him as being a horrific tyrant that I either serve or be killed by him. There was absolutely no benefit from seeing the ending of that film. It’s the exact same deal here. Besides, if I were to use your logic, there really is no problem showing my three-month old second-cousin the X-Men movie (in particular, Senator Kelly’s death) or, heck, The Dark Knight, even, or for that matter, reading to her 120 Nights of Sodom. Besides, not all the old fairy tales had good messages. I personally thought Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Mermaid had a genuinely terrible message to give to kids, since it essentially communicated that you can basically sell your family to some misfortune and screw everyone over, even commit suicide, and you’d still get rewarded with an immortal soul just because you don’t kill the Prince (in my version of the ending, the mermaid would have been cast to Hell for what she did, although NOT before being granted a soul). If anything, I thought Disney’s version was a massive improvement.
Third of all, you DO realize Walt Disney was a conservative and wouldn’t even DARE make political correct statements in his films, right? For goodness sakes, he fought against both the Nazis and the Communists, and Political Correctness was invented by the Marxists (heck, the first country to implement it was the USSR under Stalin, or barring that, Mao’s China). So there is definitely no way the Disney versions, at least those under his charge, were pushing PC.
