Scientists examined some of the reasons as to why people drink alcohol. Of course, some of these reasons can be personal - a special occasion, habit, outing with a loved one, or Friday evening.
However, these are all specific occasions. It is important to consider what a person’s motivation is when they drink during these times. What is it that they want to achieve?
This study is not simply about those who are alcoholics. Scientists in this study were interested in the behavior of all drinkers without exception, even if a person drinks only once a year and solely for serious matters.
Scientists believe that this will help reduce the consumption of alcohol around the world. They suggest that the next time you drink, think about why you decided to do it. There are many people who drink before going to bed to relax. There are those who drink with friends. But if you drink because you want to forget about your problems, then drinking is not your best option. It may help to remember that all the problems you want to forget about when you drink will still be there when you are sober again.

People drink because they are either happy, sad or bored.
I wonder if my ex gf was part of this study.
Not saying this to be funny, but she was “literally” a case study in alcoholism.
A study group on alcoholism from IU followed and interviewed her and her family regularly for 20 years.
I didn’t learn of this until near the end of our relationship, when her barely-functioning, closeted binge-drinking alcoholism finally took it’s toll on me.
Those who don’t believe in moderation are immoderate.
When I drank I never needed a motivation

Weeks after I stopped drinking 24 years ago, I remember hearing one view was, alcoholics drink because they think they have to.
That was fairly close to my own view, once I drank due to addiction.
Substance addiction produces withdrawal discomfort, which the user seeks to avoid, keeping the cycle going.
So I quit just once, cold turkey. No detox, no coddling, just AA and gradually learning that I could do without, after all.
Physical discomfort minimal. Mental adjustment to change, plenty of challenge learning new thinking. IOW learning that I didn’t have to drink, and to be fine with that.
To make other people more interesting.
To make other people more tolerable.
There are definitely people I couldn’t tolerate unless I had a drink. It is the only way I can keep peace in the family.
I call bs. No one said they drink alcohol because it tastes good? Not one? Ridiculous. The fruity stuf with vodka or rum in it, a good beer someone likes, a good wine, or a certain brand of a distilled spirit?

Hmmm... a little Angel’s Envy with a few ice cubes... or a dry Martini with olives... or a Manhattan... or a nice dry red wine... they just plain taste good.
That’s why I drink them, at least.
