This was definitely not your father’s Oldsmobile, because he never had the chance to buy it.
The last Oldsmobile ever built is going up for auction on Dec. 15. The 2004 Alero is still owned by General Motors and until recently was part of the GM Heritage Center collection.
The dark cherry sedan rolled off the line at Lansing Car Assembly in Michigan on April 29, 2004 and was signed under the hood and in the trunk by all of the workers at the now-shuttered plant.
GM had announced plans in 2000 to eliminate what was at the time America’s oldest car brand, due to its unprofitability. Pontiac, Saturn and Hummer would follow it into the history books a few years later, leaving the automaker with four core American brands: Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac.
The Alero is being offered at the State Line Auto Auction in Waverly, N.Y., which is one of GM’s top outlets for selling company-owned and off-lease cars. The automaker has not said why it has decided to let the car go...

Not all are bad. I have a 2004 Buick Century (with the V6) that I bought new, and religiously changed the oil every 3000 miles, as well as other maintenance. It had a few features that stopped working over the years (tire pressure sensing was a joke from day 1) but overall it has been extremely reliable and has averaged 28 to 30 miles per gallon.
It now has 275,000 miles on it and refuses to die...which ticks me off because until it does I can’t justify one of those nifty Dodge Challengers to Mrs. RepRivFarm. I drive it to work every day.
As with most car makes....some are good designs, some not.

Agreed.
My last GM product was a 2002 Pontiac Bonneville. It was a comfortable car, drove well, and as for looks, well, there were uglier cars. But this Bonneville would break, sitting in my driveway. It was a constant headache.
I traded the Bonneville in on a ‘05 Camry and never looked back. Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia... you can buy those cars and you don’t have to become a frequent flier at the dealership service department.
The Olds Alero used to be a common vehicle in the Bigs rental fleets. Meh-— Had a rental Chevy Corsica crap out on us halfway up to Santa Fe ski slopes around 1998. Thrifty came out and replaced it with a Ford Thunderbird requested by a friend with me.
I wouldn’t have bought the piece of crap in ‘04...why would I or anyone else want it now?
Been eyeballin a 67 Delmont tjat is just wasting away in the rain near me....cool lines and curves....and same car Ted Kennedy drove into causeway.

I heard a rumor that GM might be selling their Buick brand to a group of their chinese parts suppliers. Apparently, the chinese are all crazy about the Buick brand. Go figure.

In the mid-70’s I had three friends who all had their folks maybe 67 or 68 Oldsmos, they were all that light metallic green and all looked pretty much the same. It was kind of funy, weird funny. No, it wasn’t a conspiracy but after a few joints we all wondered if we were seeing things when they were all together.
Those cars all ran probably well over 250K miles.
The thing was so unreliable that my brother and I called it the “Oldsmo-PILE”.
