The NFL and ESPN badly misjudged Trump. Now they're paying the price.

The NFL put out a statement on Wednesday denying it had capitulated to President Donald Trump and banned players from kneeling when the National Anthem plays before games.

This remains true, so far as we know, in the abstract. The league has not imposed any formal restrictions. (Yet. There are more meetings planned.) But even as Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones threatened on Sunday to bench any player judged to be "disrespecting the flag," the presidential blitz continues -- and it becomes clearer that the NFL and ESPN's attempts to appease Trump have failed.

ESPN retreated on Monday, suspending SportsCenter host Jemele Hill, who has been critical of Trump on Twitter, following "a second violation of our social media guidelines." The inciting posts came in response to Jones' remarks, when she posited that fans who were dismayed by his statement might be wise to quit lining his pockets. (Hill later added that she was "not advocating a NFL boycott.").....

I wonder how many hours (minutes?) Jemele Hill will be ‘suspended’ this time.

Sympathy for her, animus towards Trump's Hannity interview, resentment of Goodell/Jerry Jones should feed into an interesting player backlash this weekend. This will anger fans even more!!

This is really a "more popcorn, please" moment. Also, players, please show us the clinched fist so the demise of the NFL will be that much more assured.

Including locking arms. I equate that to wizzing on the flag, the same as kneeling, sitting, fist-raising or any of the other antics.

“Disrespect is disrespect.”

Agreed. If it is during or even linked to the National Anthem, it’s an entirely different level of disrespect. The League is dead to me because they permitted this to happen. Perhaps they can salvage some fans if they finally stop insulting our anthem, our flag, our military, our country, and our ancestors who died for their freedom to act like spoiled brats, and end the disrespect.

Last evening’s Hannity Rally in Middletown, PA, where he interviewed POTUS Trump for the entire hour, the interior of the Air Force Reserve hangar was literally upholstered with the flag. It was beautiful.

I have just received an email from a reliable source that the Chicago Police Dept is going to replace their patrol car sirens with a playing of the National Anthem. This will bring the fleeing suspect/s to a halt and immediate kneeling on one knee with arms folded. Other police departments considering doing the same.

BHO very upset about this change in patrol procedurs and has requested speech time at the UN to protest this unjust violation of fleeing suspects civil rights. NFL preparing a release for later in the day allegedly voicing diapproval ot this new police procedure.

:>)))

Yes, that’s how the Fake Media will spin it, but in reality, Trump may have saved professional football from cultural rot and an endless spiral downward.

The NFL will continue to take heavy losses, but maybe a few years from now we’ll get real reform in the sport.

We can only hope.

In any case it was time to stop the foolishness because it was in danger of infecting college football if you let the NFL continue its rampage of disrespect.

NO NO and NO.

The self-indulgent millionaires and billionaires badly misjudged us, the American people.

Trump only picked it up during the firestorm and threw some gasoline on the fire.

Adding a fourth aspect - ad buys. There were already reports last summer that ad buys were softer than expected. That was before the National Anthem disrespect started.

Granted, some ad buys are placed well in advance and cannot be revoked, but I expect future ad buys and renewals will be negatively affected.

Not sure what % of NFL revenues are a result of ad buys. Would be interesting to know.

When ESPN started, they played entire games of several sports. Each year, less sports, more talking heads, talking about sports. Now they’re bored with sports and want to lie about politics, just like the all the news channels that have horrible ratings. ESPN is not America’s conscience, it’s a private tv network that quit covering sports long ago.

Adding a 5th....In Michigan (I don’t know if all teams have this agreement), if all the tickets aren’t sold, or a certain percentage, then there is a TV blackout of the Lions game, so no one gets to watch the game.

Hi ol’ bud...

I don’t think they are getting it wrong as much as spinning it. Like many, I quit watching 14 months ago — before the election and before the campaign speech where DJT offered an opinion.

CNN would like to say that “Trump is the blame” and make this about Trump. It would prevent certain hard line Democrats from facing the revulsion of the thug culture NFL. They want to rescue the NFL thug culture and by getting Trump foremost in the mind of the standard Dem, they hope to do just that.

DJT only tweeted what millions of us were saying privately or not loud enough for the MSM to pay attention. The NFL compounded their problem by pivoting to attack DJT instead of saying “Houston, we have a problem.”

Somewhere back in the summer, I read a piece that spoke at two to four percent loss being seen this season on TV advertising...this was before the kneeling activity.

I also saw a mention or two of a new creation....six-second ads...which the NFL were going to inject into empty space of games. This was some market-gimmick to recover lost revenue.

The big question would be the Super Bowl Ads, and if they can retain the 2016 value.

Actually, he’ll wait to the league craters and buy the league and make it very pro-American and patriotic. :)
