NHS bosses are warning we should be braced for a bad flu season. They cite the experience of Australia and New Zealand, which have just gone through their winters.
What happens there, they say, tends to be a good pointer to how flu spreads in the UK.
How bad has it been in Australia and New Zealand?
They've certainly had their worst flu season for a number of years. Like the UK, the past few winters have seen pretty low levels of flu circulating.
But this winter it has been different. Figures up to the end of August - not even the end of their winter - suggest there was nearly double the number of cases of flu than the average over the past five winters. Reports have emerged of hospitals struggling, which is why NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens raised the alarm in a speech on Tuesday.

You should worry about your sanity if you’re thinking about letting them stick that needle in your arm LOL

SILVER SOL has kept our family flu free for years.
No way will we take an injection with questionable ingredients.
I take zinc with echinacea.

Government calls for compulsory flu vaccinations

Don’t worry. You will be surrounded by complacent sheep who will take the vaccine—herd immunity.
Why would I get a flu shot that won't work against the worst strain of flu? Better to stay out of places where flu spreads, if possible.
If you have a child in school, like me, then you probably already have the flu.
You need to get the flu occasionally just to keep your immune system familiar with the current crop of bugs. Kids are great for building up mom and dad’s systems!
I wouldn’t worry too much, until ol’ Ahab starts coughing on everybody, as he smiles.
I find that the years I have gotten the shots, I have suffered an increased number of cold/flu-like illnesses than when I don't get the shot.
This year will be a "try to stay out of sneezing crowds and wash the hands often" approach.
Hard to tell what some vaccines cause down the road as far as other issues. My daughter is a RN and she says that those who have been treated with the Chicken Pox vaccines are having a much higher incidence of Shingles than those who actually had the Chicken Pox.
Even if the vaccine does not completely prevent the particular strain of flu that is circulating, the antibodies it causes your body to produce can still provide some protection. That means you might still get sick, but the disease will not be as severe. And that difference in disease severity can make the difference between life and death.
The absolute worst case scenario as far as flu goes is when a strain starts circulating that most people have never encountered. Then, they have no residual immunity to it. That is when the flu is most deadly. That's what happened in 1918.
Has it occurred to you that maybe the "false alarms" did not turn out to be disastrous because of the efforts made by governments and pharmaceutical companies to produce vaccines and administer them to the most vulnerable people?
It's like the Y2K thing: there was so much concern about it that the IT world went into overdrive to fix potential problems ahead of time and had staff standing by during the 1999-2000 transition to take care of anything that might have been missed. And Y2K turned out uneventful because of those efforts.
Just because a disaster is averted by planning and mitigation efforts does not mean that there was no reason to take preventative action against the disaster.
Yup,those newfangled fraudulent things like vaccinations, penicillin and X-rays are just a way to....
Our friends in OZ both have had it and it is really bad. He cracked a rib from coughing...
Should I worry? No.
Really? Are there actual medical studies that have established that? Can you link to those studies?
Anecdotal stories are not evidence, and people are very prone to confirmation bias. This is why we do studies.
Most people who get shingles are over the age of 60. The chickenpox vaccine was not introduced until 1995. Thus, the people who have received chickenpox vaccine at an age where it could actually prevent chickenpox have not yet reached the age when shingles is most common.
I had chickenpox in the 1960s. In the mid 2000s, I had a chickenpox vaccine. I got shingles in 2012. I got shingles because the vaccine cannot cause my body to eradicate virus that has been living inside my nerve cells since 1966.
I’m worried that if i die from the flu I wont get to see the horrified expressions on my creditors’ faces :)
