Liberals thought Orwell was writing training manuals.
The Left completely misses the point of 1984. It actually became a best seller again after Trump was elected.
1984 is about the dangers of an all-powerful state, which is the natural outcome of following Leftist policies and ideology. We see it on campus — “Hate Speech is Non Speech.” We see it in government where both parties have created an all-knowing deep state to “keep us safe.”
Conservatives are about less government and less government control over our lives. That’s the opposite of what Big Brother wants.
What’s the name of her new book?

I generally don’t think that 99-percent of the population have ever read ‘1984’. Even when some college professor requires it for a class to be read....most will pick up the Cliff-Notes, the Spark-Notes, or pick up a Classic-Comics cartoon book on the story.
Rumor has it she also spends countless hours playing the White Album backwards for clues about Satan and the meaning of “Paul is dead”.

Hitler’s original choice of titles for his book was, “Four and a Half Years of Struggle against Lies, Stupidity and Cowardice.” (His publisher shortened it to, My Struggle.) Maybe Hillary could rename her book, ‘My Two Year Struggle against My Health, My Psyche, and My Tone Deaf Instincts.’
I read it, in sixth grade. I only skipped the romantic stuff in the middle. The forty or fifty pages at the beginning, and the forty or fifty pages at the end, I read, in horror and amazement and fear.
I remember it vividly because Buffalo Springfield's song For What It's Worth was on the radio at the time, and its message reinforced the queasy and sick feeling the book gave me.
I don't think any other fiction book ever affected me so much.
I have read it on my own and not part of a course but quite a while ago now. It’s not a happy book. The most frightening part (spoiler alert) is the ending where the state embodied by Big Brother wins. Any normal person would get the message but of course H is a very warped person. I haven’t read Animal Farm but I should get around to it. It’s a shorter read I think.
A couple of years ago for Christmas presents,

The DPRK is an implementation of Orwell’s 1984.

Read Solzhenitsyn’s One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich while I was in 8th grade. Found it in the school library. It was a life-changing experience.

I tried to read Cancer Ward at about that time, but I got so creeped out by the description of patients in the actual cancer ward described in the book's early pages that I never got to the political allegory. The book came out in 1968, the year I entered eighth grade. I'm not sure where I found it, but it might have been in the school library.
Perhaps she’ll talk about the chapter “Putting lipstick on a walking pig”.
