Vanity: Preparing to move to Phoenix
self | self

Posted on 08/29/2017 1:35:04 PM PDT by Dr. Sivana

We are looking to relocate from Columbus, Georgia to Phoenix, Arizona. Two members of my family suffer from the local pollen and humid weather. We also need to be closer to traditional Catholic Latin Mass and Sacraments. Wonderful as Columbus is culturally and politically (in the region, not the city proper), there aren't a lot of local traditional Catholic resources.

I have been stymied in my attempts to even get so much as an interview for the jobs I apply for online.

Presently, I work in IT (storage/servers/backup) in the financial industry. My skills are not cutting edge and I am not a programmer/developer, but in the past I was always able to get interviews at least. Any of you Arizona folks know of a good strategy for finding good employment in the area?

Please don't try to sell me on other parts of the country, my wife and I have done our research, and this is where we wish to relocate.

Thanks for providing information from a social source I find more trustworthy than almost any other.

I can’t help with employment. All I can tell you is that Phoenix is absolutely booming. Intel putting in a massive new facility here in Chandler, huge auto construction factory in Yuma, about 40 miles from my house.

If you can’t find a job here, you can’t find a job.

I know you don’t want to hear it, but Austin or San Antonio for work, and live 30 or so miles west not near any of the rivers.

New Braunfels, TX was a finalist in our selection process (the small city with a traditional Mass/church was attractive) with a commute into San Antonio, but they cancel Mass seasonally.

There are other advantages for Phoenix for us that I didn't want to bore everyone with.

I’m also pretty sure there are no: “Black Lives Matter, Antifa or even Liberal” chapters in Mesa or Gilbert.

Among the many good things about AZ the best is you can help to vote Mc Lame outta office!

Forgot. Mesa has no primary city property tax. Largest city in the USA without one.

According to My Heritage the surname Sivana is Peruvian.

Could well be, but the comic book nom I use is on the pale side:

I wonder how his Quechua is?

Ugly town imho. Takes forever to get anywhere..too many people. Try a little north at Cave Creek, which used to be nice. Maybe even Anthem...or a little south, or even west...Just stay out of Phoenix proper.

We live in western Colorado and travel to Arizona fairly frequently. If we were to move to Arizona, we plan to spend a month there this winter, Prescott would be our first choice. Higher elevation than Phoenix and much cooler during the very hot summer months. An added bonus, Prescott is strongly conservative.

I'm okay with greater Phoenix. The Church we would likely go to is smack in the middle of the city just off of I-10. Rental/housing costs are very reasonable, and having dealt with Chicago and Atlanta traffic, I doubt I'll be too fazed by Phoenix traffic. I'm not an aesthete, and found both Tempe and the ASU area to be just fine. We were looking west as you get a lot of house for a little money, but were planning to Air BnB until we got a feel for the region.

Don’t move to Phoenix, move to Payson!

Ha! I was in Payson two years ago. I bought a cowboy hat there. Arizona certainly is diverse. I was told that Sedona gets maybe 4" of snow a year, while Flagstaff, a little more than an hour away, gets over 100". I went to Tuba City to see the dinosaur tracks, and the afternoon I arrived the town was parched, dusty, and as dry as an old bone. Still, people there were excited about the flood that occurred just that morning. They described it as a biblical deluge, but the land drank it all up so there wasn't the slightest sign of it just a few hours later.

108 at midnight.

Think about it.

I love Phoenix. Free sauna every day for 8 months of the year.

I worked for Motorola back in the 1990s. They kept the thermostat down in the range we would call winter here. I'd come out of the building in the evening, and enjoy the warm outdoor temperatures. If it was less than 110, however, I'd get in the toasty car and sit there without the AC to really get warmed up (being careful not to touch the steering wheel, of course).

But, then, I grew up on the Canadian Prairies. Forty years later, I'm still thawing out.

Don’t move to Phoenix, move to Payson!

Phoenix is loaded with retired CA screwel teechurs, and they stink severely.

We don't have to be in Phoenix proper, but Payson is a little too far for the drive to church. My kids are homeschooled, so the teachers are more of an anthropological curiosity that they will be warned to keep away from.

You might want to just move and get there and THEN look for a job.

It could be that potential employers don’t want to pay to fly you there for an interview and then potentially pay for your relocation.

Excellent point, and I have given myself a Tracfone with a Phoenix number, and even took out a UPS Store address on Camelback Road. Only my current work location gives me away, and I cannot do anything about that.

With a wife and three kids a break in employment (and employer health insurance) is not an option.

State Farm Insurance has a huge new office complex in Tempe. They are always hiring there at some level. Perfect fits are, of course, rare.

We have beautiful weather 8 months out of the year. The other four months are literally like living in hell. If you don’t like really hot weather, you won’t be happy here.
