So, if you are carrying concealed, maybe its better not to say anything about it up front... if there is a chance the cop is going to panic?

If its not visible, and you aren’t exiting the car, don’t mention it? And if you are asked to exit the car, hand the officer your CCR permit first?

I’m asking. I don’t CCR but I am considering it.

Truthfully, I’m not comfortable with a full acquittal. I felt the officer began shooting hastily and not even having a woman and a child in the car didn’t slow him down. The prosecution aimed too high in their charge. I might have ruled for a manslaughter conviction absent malice.

But two major points from this story - there were two blacks on the jury, one male and one female and also that the officer was terminated though it was by negotiated settlement.

Depends on the state. You don’t list a state so no other advice.

I think the best course of action would be that if stopped, tell police you are conceal carry and have weapon on person or in vehicle and ask if you should surrender weapon until reason for stopped is resolved. Also keep hands in plain sight during conversation.

The St. Anthony Police Department most likely did Yanez a favor by dismissing him from the force. He doesn’t seem cut out for police work.

In my CCW class the subject came up. His suggestion is to not divulge unless asked. However if asked be totally honest. That’s what the CCW license is for, to show you are in compliance with the law.

Bottom line: do exactly what the officer tells you to do. The victim in this case apparently kept moving when told to stop.

Did the officer act properly? It's hard to say. The better question might be: What would I have done if placed in the same situation?

I was taught at the Concealed Carry Class to do the following...
1-Stay in the car & put your hands on top of the steering wheel and visible.
2-Turn on the dome light (if at night)
3-When the officer approaches the very first thing you say is.. “Hello Officer, I have a Concealed Carry Permit and I am (or am not carrying a weapon at the present time”
4-Follow all instructions the Officer gives you

DO NOT as was in this case say “I got a gun”

If they know you have a valid legal permit to carry, they will likely think you are a good guy

I was pulled for lack of registration sticker and I handed the officer my license & CCW. It was night and he instantly relaxed.

I don't believe he ran my license (plate , obviously). I explained that my registration didn't come back from Harrisburg.

The officer spent some time telling me his thoughts on our inept government and then bid me good evening.

Maybe its just me but this attitude that the public must immediately comply with ANY order from police or risk death is wrong. You are talking police state.Too many itchy trigger fingers with many, many police totally unqualified to deal with the public in a professional manner. I don’t know what the answer is. Oh by the way, I was a cop 1973-1978.
