The race to create self-driving cars is onbut what happens when theyre everywhere and nobody has to drive?
That could lead to a passenger economy worth $7 trillion by 2050, according to a new report by Intel and analyst firm Strategy Analytics.
While the name of the potential new market is lame, the amount of cash it's estimated to drive is not: the study predicts self-driving cars will free up 250 million hours of commuting time per year, providing the backbone for a thriving $800 billion industry by 2035, when the study predicts fully autonomous vehicles will begin to proliferate globally....

Bull$hit.
“The door opened; you got in.” (rolls eyes)
[self-driving cars]
Wait! What happens when Hillary gets into a cab and Macedonian hackers backed up by the KBG hack the cab???!!
Did anybody think about THAT!!!???????????
Too much like the lightning.
Yeah.
Pretty sure that a 2 cylinder Prius isn’t going to back my boat down the ramp in a cross wind.
Don’t want them!!!!
The money will flow into the pockets of the corporations that own these cars. They will not flow to small businesses, like local mechanic shops or gas stations. Even the chargers these cars will plug into will be owned by the same corporations, who will use their own people to maintain the charging stations.
There is only the inflow of assets, whose outflow will not be proportionate.
Remove the driver from the taxi and it will be cheaper, but not cheap.
I know it will help out all the bars I can think of. And as a musician that is a Good Thing. Going to hurt police revenue, though.
I’m going to program my self-driving car to steal gasoline and electricity.
Me either! I want to keep my skillz. Also know how to drive a stick and handle a trailer. Want to keep it that way.
( self driving car breaks down) it tells you, sorry for your safety you are not allowed to leave the car until a robot service unit comes by. (Windows automatically roll up, doors lock. Hundred degrees outside.)
Gas stations are small businesses? LOL.
Where have I heard that before? Wasn’t that going to be that 2 wheel balancing toy?
Drones ... I can see them being big (maybe intrusive) and life changing ... both good and bad but they are not going away.
I don’t want a Drone but I could see times I’d like to Rent One. If I am going to be out of town ... a spy in the sky!
(No worries girls I am happily Divorced and well over 60)
“We hope you enjoyed the ride.”
Nope.
The thing about cars is that they contribute to the yokels having this confounded sense of independence. They think they can just hop in and drive where ever they want without concern for carbon emissions or anything. Put them in robotic cars and (eventually) they'll go only where they need to go, per the discretion of their betters. Just ask Elon Musk -- it's time for all of us to stop being so selfish and just get on the bus. Besides, getting behind the wheel of a sweet car is fun, and there's no room for fun in a worker's paradise.
They need automatic fire extinguishers like funny cars.
Technically, yes. Lots of gas stations are still single owners. Or he might own two.
The point is that these corporations will not be putting as much back into the economy as they will be taking out of it. That will dry up capital and make it harder for an individual to be able to participate in the economy.
It’s a form of feudalism that is forming, I think.
