TIM ALLEN IS NO LONGER THE LAST MAN STANDING
Canada Free Press ^ | 05/13/17 | Jeff Crouere

Unfortunately, broadcast television networks today are not interested in appealing to the massive Trump electorate

Despite healthy ratings, ABC promptly cancelled Tim Allen’s popular sitcom, Last Man Standing this week. The show was a successful part of the ABC line-up for six years. While some media reports claim that ABC cancelled the show due to poor ratings, the truth is that the program was the second highest rated comedy and the third highest rated “scripted” show on the network. In fact, during the final years of the show, Last Man Standing drew an impressive average of 8.1 million viewers each week.

Allen’s real crime was not poor ratings, but having the audacity to announce he was a conservative. He understood the challenge he faced in Hollywood. In an interview with ABC late night host Jimmy Kimmel, Allen lamented that “You gotta be real careful around here. You get beat up if you don’t believe what everybody else believes. This is like ‘30s Germany.”

I should have said, old shows would not have an openly and explicitly homosexual character, as opposed to innuendo being displayed.

That was the only show I watched on ABC. ABC has lost me with their crap shows. We haven't gone to Disney World or Universal Studios in years. Partly because the children are all grown up and partly because Big Media/Hollywood pisses us off.

I just read that they reversed that decision after a public outcry But I did read it on the internet, so who knows?

Except for “Bluebloods” I can’t think of one network show I watch now. They have pretty much driven their core, mainstream audience away. Every show now has some sort of gay character, subtext, or subplot that usually has nothing to do with the main plot.

Frankly I love the streaming services, I have a Roku, and I can find something to watch. Youtube has proved to b e a great source of things to watch, a lot of hard to fine things that I like.

I also love reruns of “law & Order, L. & O. Criminal Intent, a some others. I am about probably cut the cord soon. I just don’t find enough stuff to watch to justify the cost of Direct TV.

Family sitcoms with a mom and dad and kids have given way to sitcoms of “unconventional” families. Are there any sitcoms nowadays featuring a traditional family???

There is a new show that is kind of cute and funny - Man with a Plan. I think it is on Mondays on CBS. Family man, small business owner, three kids, wife goes back to work, has to take care of the kids and become homeroom dad and still do his day job. ; )

Can you imagine the outcry if any show had the gay character be the buffoon???

What outcry? When sitcoms have more than one gay character, at least one of them is usually a buffoon. Jack on Will and Grace, for example.

The gay characters on Modern Family manage to be as buffoonish as the straight characters, more or less.

It's often pointed out that those guys don't even like each other -- the whole relationship is a comic device.

It's true that the show is "normalizing" homosexuality, but not by making it any kind of ideal or positive thing, rather by making people used to showing a gay couple that is as absurd and annoying as the heterosexual couples on the screen every week.

One of the few good programs on TV. I get so tired of the emotionless zombie women beating up nine guys at a time without having a blow landed against them, while their male counterparts win fights by getting the crap knocked out of them first. Predictable nonsense.

Family Ties was very popular also. Same theme...sort of.

But in real life Michael J. Fox politically is the opposite of the character he portrayed.

Give “The Ranch” a try. Netflix, never a dull moment and hilarious. I heard that other than Sam Elliot, a lot of the characters were on something called Friends. I can forgive that. (Sam hates Obama,in real life also).

You raise a very important point that many don’t realize about the TV business. From the standpoint of the studio (and producers), the goal is to get to five years, which gives you enough episodes for syndication. Beyond that, the show really needs to be a ratings powerhouse to continue, because most of the talent is due a big pay raise in season #6 or shortly thereafter.

As a proven TV commodity, Tim didn’t start off at union scale, so he was already making a very nice paycheck. And, I’m guessing he is a profit participant, so he’ll be making more that just residuals in the future. Then again, with the creative accounting practices employed in Hollywood, more than a few actors have been surprised at how little “profit” they receive. The late James Garner spent years in court battling Universal over “The Rockford Files.” It was a big hit on NBC and did well in syndication, but the studio produced documents that showed the program actually “lost” money.

Timeless was uncanceled today.

https://twitter.com/TVGrimReaper “Says The reaper’s pet peeve is ascribing TV decisions to all manner of nonsense, when it’s always money.”
“A wacky uncancellation for #Timeless!

NBC heard from the accountants after the fee was cut!”

The real reason ABC canceled “Last Man Standing” was almost certainly due to politics. Allen’s character is, as described by Deadline, a …

… political conservative and devout Christian adhering to traditional American values, the blue-collar comedy appeals to viewers in the Heartland, a constituency that helped elect Donald Trump as president and has been energized post-election as evidenced by the ratings success of new USA drama Shooter.

just looked up the cast, none were on Friends. Just Ashton Kutcher is from That 70’s Show. “Joey Tribiani”, Matt LeBlanc is on the new show Man with a Plan, “Joey” is from Friends.

Uncle Arthur.

Who was not focused on making everyone around him aware that he was "gay." Back when I watched "Bewitched" I just thought Uncle Arthur was a quirky guy who was very amusing. I didn't know what "gay" was back then, and I didn't recognize any of his behavior as "gay".

I think most people who watched that show didn't associate his behavior with homosexuality, they just thought he was a kooky uncle.

Nowadays we recognize a lot of his mannerisms as "gay", but back then, most people didn't know any better.

For what it's worth, Paul Lynde was in an episode of "Love American Style" where he was lusting after his female secretary.

Pedophile to boot.

Where did you hear that? My understanding is that he was married to the same woman for his entire life. I had heard nothing of him engaging in pedophilia.
