They're going to rebuild this city on rock and roll.

The former Trump Taj Mahal is receiving a $375 million facelift that will turn it into the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Atlantic City. Officials anticipate the project to bring 1,000 construction jobs and 3,000 permeant jobs. The opening is anticipated for summer 2018.

"We have confidence in the fact that the Hard Rock will do this the right way and take a property that has a great tradition in this city and create an absolutely new tradition for the people of Atlantic City and the people who come here," said Gov. Chris Christie.

Dignitaries crowded into the Hard Rock Cafe for Wednesday's press conference. While they were waiting for it to begin, the B Street Band, a Bruce Springsteen cover band, played. Steven Van Zandt himself, guitarist for the E Street Band, was on the side of the stage watching the performance....

Strikes me as a sucker bet by Hard Rock. Atlantic City has been in decline for years with all the other casino competition.

I thought that thanks,at least partially,to Indian casinos Atlantic City was dying...again.There are two huge Indian casinos in Connecticut...not too far from the Tri-State Area...that draw huge numbers. Some of those people are surely from Boston but a good number are also from Fairfield and Westchester Counties.

Once in awhile we head up to Oklahoma to Winstar. Very big complex. Decent buffet.

Atlantic City is a drug and hooker infested ghetto with a few casinos. I can't imagine why anyone would invest a penny there. Even the beach stinks.

Spent a week at the Hard Rock Riviera Maya (Cancun) in February. I gotta say, it was very well run.

Musician?

Anyhow, I could see it becoming an entertainment venue. Does it HAVE to have gambling? If it does, however, I’d like to see no more sweetheart deals with government. Let gambling be like any other business and let it sink or swim on the merits or lack thereof as seen by the public.

I spent a week at the one in Tampa. It was a good week. I was there for a national sales meeting so I didn’t gamble but the amenities were great.

All this news of free-market job creation is infuriating the left. It’s making Trump look good, and we can’t have that!

The exception, of course, is government jobs. That’s how a real economy is built, in their minds — more government employees, represented by unions.

And to think we haven’t even had tax cuts yet. Most of this job creation (except for regulation rollback that is already taking place) is based on expectations Trump will revitalize the economy through concrete measures, but has become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Well, in fairness their market is heavily distorted by NJ law which requires casinos to only be permitted in the ghetto of Atlantic City. No other businesses have that restriction, nor the huge amount of oversight from a state board. Casinos might do better in NJ if they were allowed to build close to NYC or Philly in areas that are safe and pleasant.

Nobody's saying it in the article but the casino that's being renovated, the Taj Mahal, was actually built by Trump.
