Just repeal

As I write this, the House is pushing for a floor vote on the American Health Care Act. It “hangs in the balance” as some mainstream media news outlets are saying, but that doesn’t really paint the picture properly. In reality, it hangs over the GOP’s head in two major ways.

If it passes, things get really interesting in the Senate. There, the GOP cannot afford more than a couple of internal detractors and in the current form, there are more than enough. We haven’t seen the final version, but unless major changes were made, it’s very possible it could pass the House and get shot down in the Senate.

If it doesn’t pass the House, the spotlight is on the Freedom Caucus. President Trump has allegedly threatened Congressman Mark Meadows and others with losing their seats in 2018 if they don’t vote for it. Just as in the Senate, it would take major revisions for most Freedom Caucus members to reverse their publicly stated stance that they will vote against it.

Here’s the thing. People weren’t dying on the streets before Obamacare. I’m not so naive as to think we can or even should go back to the previous system. In fact, I think the previous system was already too burdened by government regulations. As conservatives who believe in the free market economy, we recognize that the best way to make health care truly affordable for the masses is to get government out of the picture. They need to open it up to competition across state lines.

Some will point out that tens of millions of Americans will “lose” their health care if we don’t pass something. They’d be technically right. However, a large bulk of those “losing” their health care coverage will do so willingly, as should be their right. There are conservatives who point out that it’s not fair for people to not carry health insurance and rely on taxpayers to pay big for their emergency care when they need it, but that’s singular and very shortsighted. The cost to taxpayers to cover uninsured emergency procedures is infinitesimally small compared to the cost we pay for ACA or the cost we would pay if AHCA passes.

If they try to repeal it in its entirety, it will be filibustered and will never get passed. And you cannot restrain that filibuster rule for legislation. So they have to do pieces under reconciliation.

And repealing is not a solution.

The attendants of Fedzilla will never repeal Obamacare.
It gives Fedzilla enormous power, something Fedzilla does not want to give up.

People see the free market improve quality, choice - and lower prices - on anything from hamburgers to vehicles to clothing to computers.

But leftist scare tactics have worked a treat as people refuse to see how competition delivers similar quality of medical care.

And while we're on the subject, to all the 'Health care is a right' people, I ask: what kind of care, how much and for how long?

We may be obligated to treat a bullet wound but are we obligated to give you unlimited treatments for skin blemishes? Are you entitled to state-of-the-art Gamma knife operations? What about diabetes supplies? Shall we use 50s surgical techniques as part of your 'rights' or do you demand the latest keyhole surgery?

There must be a mental switch that becomes defective and leads people to conclude that because something is ubiquitous - food, housing, communications devices - it should be free.

There will be no vote today. Maybe never. Let Obamacare go broke.

Can’t “just repeal” because Obamacare destroyed the industry. The plans people used to have don’t exist anymore. Takes time to fix this mess, but a simply repeal is the very worst scenario. only would have worked 6 years ago before things were gutted

In my opinion President Trump needs to get the insurance companies on board with some assurances on premiums. That seems to be the missing link here, the fear of escalating premiums.

Correct. The bill doesn't even really "repeal" the individual mandate. It merely sets the rate to 0%, but leaves all the IRS machinery in place so that the bas**ds can raise the rates again in a couple of years to punish those healthy young who fail to pay tribute to the crony companies for plans they don't need.

__________
The free market isn’t magic. Yes, you can rebuild the health industry over time, but not overnight. Which is why a repeal only solution has never been a viable solution. The industry is in shambles.

Nevermind the fact that Trump would never get support for a simple repeal with the current makeup of the GOP. So people are expecting him to somehow change Congress itself. The same one that picked Ryan as speaker for God’s sake. The same GOP that did everything they could to stop him in the primaries.

This is where people have to be realistic. What bill do they think Trump can pass? isn’t it far better to get some things, and the ability to phased out others later, as opposed to keeping Obamacare forever, and hampering everything else?

... To which they’d say, without healthy people in the plans, the premiums will go not just through the roof, but through the stratosphere. That’s why the insurance industry wrote the ACA to include the mandate. It made them billions and, they’ll say, kept the premiums lower than if there was no mandate.

Agree. I believe they should pass what they have now in the House and let the Senate get rid of maternity/other Obamacare mandates. You don’t get a final Bill out of the House. The Senate also has to get rid of foreign students, illegals, plus all Federal Gov oversight/control. The plans offered should be like those prior to Zerocare. They should be tailored to meet individual needs not one size fits all.
Plans should be offered across state lines with little State Insurance commissioner control/influence.

The Senate will make whatever comes out of the House worse, not better.

There hasn’t been a “free market” in health care since WW2, when business started to offer health care
