SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) - A "cyanide bomb" planted by U.S. predator-control agents targeting coyotes near homes and hiking trails in Idaho exploded when a boy handled the device, injuring him and killing his dog, authorities and relatives said on Friday.
Canyon Mansfield, 14, was playing with his yellow Labrador retriever, Casey, on Thursday afternoon near his home east of Pocatello when he saw what he thought was a sprinkler head on the ground and touched the device, causing it to detonate.
The explosion sprayed the boy and his 3-year-old, 90-pound (40 kg) pet with toxic cyanide gas, according to the boy's mother, Theresa Mansfield.
Canyon said there was a bang like a bomb, then an explosion of an orange substance that covered him and Casey, who was writhing in pain on the ground before he died right in front of Canyon, she said.

Theresa Mansfield, the boy's mother, said her son was walking their dog on a hillside behind their home when they encountered the device. She said her son was knocked down when it activated, and that he watched as the dog died....
Argyle said the device was in a patchwork area of private and public land and is believed to have been placed on U.S. Bureau of Land Management land. Argyle said the area is frequented by hikers, bikers and ATV riders. He said the area also has some sheep grazing.
Bannock County Sheriff Lorin Nielsen, who described the devices as "cyanide bombs," said no notice was given to authorities about their placement.

Regardless, you dont leave boobie traps just laying around for 14 year old kids to stumble upon.
What complete idiot conceived of pest control using a land mine that sprays cyanide?
Exactly. Or notify the residents of them being placed way ahead of time. That annoying phone alert would get peoples attention too. Hell, none of us can ever turn those alerts off.
I have a problem with government employees using poisons of any kind.
Three years ago our 9 year old black Maine Coon cat brought home a rat and left it on the back porch. The cat died the next day from the rat poison. Can’t they just use traps?
I suspect we will ultimately find out that the bomb was the idea of some Bureau of Land Management bureaucrat, and the feds are desperately trying to hide this.
The need for a booby trap cyanide bomb is outrageous .. We could use some along the Mexican border, they have coyotes there.
We have coyotes out here where we live. So far, they don’t
bother us and we don’t bother them. They’re very timid. If
they ever mix with regular dogs, the mix can be bolder. Our
dogs have always “talked” with the coyotes, both howling at
the top of their lungs. - A “cyanide bomb” would definitely
be a cure worse than the disease.
You know, animals can’t read. What’s wrong with posting metal signs along appropriate paths with pictures? And having it say right on top of the device “DANGER - POISON - KEEP AWAY” and a skull and crossbones? I mean if you’re going to have such a device any way. Or would that be too much trouble?
“... near homes and hiking trails in Idaho...”
Which can be as many miles away as the writer needs to fit the story.
I’m from the gov’t and I am here to help.
I don’t like to be manipulated. It was not a bomb, the dog was not “covered”. etc.
Here is a video of the explosive potential of these devices:

These thing are better described as poison dispensers, not “land mines”.
Trying to manipulated me with lies loses my support. I hereby permit the use of these devices on private property, trespassers beware.
You’re slicing the pie pretty thin. Okay let’s not call it a bomb let’s called a cyanide Auto sprayer.
It might feel like a bomb if it covered you and killed your dog right there. Whatever the BLM appreciates you coming to their defense.
“We have coyotes out here where we live. So far, they dont
bother us and we dont bother them.”
Do you have Sheep? A couple coyotes will kill a dozen at a time and only eat one or less.
Coyotes will also kill every small dog and cat they come across.
What dimly-lit thought this was a good idea? Reading from one of the posts, a lot of this happened during Clinton and escalated during Bowbama!
The left wanted to ban the use on mines by the military. But its ok when a fed agency sets them up. Whats, next? Bouncing Bettys to kill groundhogs.
You could be on to something there, My FRiend. I would say that you are right on target.
“It might feel like a bomb if it covered you”
You don’t read so good, nor apparently, can you see — these things don’t “cover” anything.
Here is a video of a beagle gnawing on one with pepper instead of the NaCN powder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8armJKmONek
The dog knew it was going to pop, and was coming in low on the side to avoid it. Oooo it’s a land mine!
You, and these propagandists are liars.
I thought Compound 1080 was banned years ago.
Or is this some new stuff.
