Despite her assertion that there's a 1st Amendment protection given the media to publish the tax returns of someone they deem worthy of scrutiny, Rachel Maddow is woefully ignorant. Just because she plays a journalist on television doesn't make her one.
The law is clear.

1A is a little more complex than Ms Madcow realizes.
Ha, now President Trump will wipe that smirk off her face for good!
Rut roh...
I really did not get the whole purpose of Fonzie Maddows release of Trumps tax return. Just what exactly was Fonzie trying to prove? That Trump pays his taxes? But I thought Fonzie disliked Trump?
That MadCow guy ain’t too bright. He needs to be put in prison so that everybody gets the message.
As I understand it Trump, on leaning that MSNBC was going to release the return went ahead and released it first.
After the Trump release its public domain info. Seems to me that should (unfortunately) let MSNBC off the hook.
38 million for 150 million seems high to me but I’m Scottish. I’m surprised he paid that much in taxes. I’m sure Zuckerburg and Soros paid less on more
Trump’s 2005 were already out there.
Here is a WSJ story about the published a year ago:

More proof MSNBC does no research on what it presents as “news”.
Maybe she can have the guy from the H&R Block commercials on her show to explain that. Nothing more stimulating than getting details of the Internal Revenue Code debated on an evening chit-chat show.....
You cannot access such an account unless you are actually working on that account. When accessed, the system prompts you to provide the necessary paperwork to prove you are working on the account. They don't want folks acting on thoughts like "Gee, I wonder what Tom Cruise makes..."
The audit trail for whoever accessed his account would still be there, unless NothingButCrap got paperwork from one of his accountants.
It is easy to trace this and penalize the responsible parties. Either the ones who accessed and authorized access to the account, or the accountant who processed the return.
You are right. I wonder if the move was too clever by half? Unlike Trump.
Which leads me to believe that Trump had them leaked to MSNBC to embarrass them cause I would be pretty embarrassed with it.
The only reason Trump would release it before MSNBC — thereby “letting them off the hook” — was that they knew MSNBC probably got it through legal channels.
And I don't just mean this. The assaults, vandalism, and blocking traffic with their tantrums will continue until they face consequences.
For a Rhodes Scholar, she’s not too bright.
This was never about the tax return. It was about the message being sent with its release.
26 U.S. Code § 6103 - Confidentiality and disclosure of returns and return information
(g) Disclosure to President and certain other persons(1) In general Upon written request by the President, signed by him personally, the Secretary shall furnish to the President, or to such employee or employees of the White House Office as the President may designate by name in such request, a return or return information with respect to any taxpayer named in such request.
Any such request shall state
(A) the name and address of the taxpayer whose return or return information is to be disclosed,
(B) the kind of return or return information which is to be disclosed,
(C) the taxable period or periods covered by such return or return information, and
(D) the specific reason why the inspection or disclosure is requested.
Heee heee:)
FWIW, I dont know why folks are so flipping cheerful. Of course the content was a nothingburger. The uniparty wasn’t going to expend live ammo, so to speak, to send the message. Trump and anyone willing to work with him have all been threatened with blackmail. If the people threatened submit to it, this nation is in grave danger.
