Republican Governor Paul LePage dared to begin enforcing Maine's volunteer and work requirements for food stamp (SNAP) recipients to keep their benefits. The end result was more than 9,000 non-disabled adults getting dropped from the program.
As CNS News' Eric Schiener reports, a Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) spokesman tells the Associated Press that 12,000 non-disabled adults were in Maines SNAP program before Jan. 1 - a number that dropped to 2,680 by the end of March...
The rules prevent adults, who are not disabled and do not have dependents, from receiving food stamps for more than three months unless they work at least 20 hours a week, participate in a work-training program, or meet volunteer guidelines for 24 hours out of the month.
Any one of those three minimums getting met will result in an individual to retain their SNAP food benefits.
DHHS Commissioner Mary Mayhew said the goal of the requirements is to encourage people to find work.
"If you're on these programs it means you are living in poverty and so the more that we can help incentive people on that pathway to employment and self-sufficiency the better off they're going to be," Mayhew told the Associated Press.
In Maine, once someone loses their benefits, they cannot regain assistance for three years.

Did the left call him racist yet?
So, 9000 voters went to which state instead?
Great job. Let local charities pick up the slack.
the thought of dying from hunger is good motivation for these losers of life’s lottery to get a job
Now there are fifty-six, er, forty-nine more states that should follow suit. Many won’t, but all should.
EBT stands for Easily Bilking Taxpayers. In my observance.
Half of them were probably too busy working to get a job.
Firewood delivered, furniture moved, houses painted - cash only please, no checks.
lol
Hopefully Vermont.
OR they were so drugged up they could not read.
Those who refused to comply will probably turn to some kind of crime or scam. If they’re not disabled, they’ll try to get so designated, which is pretty easy, I’m afraid. They’re not going to go hungry, that’s for sure. Apparently, they’re going to beg, borrow, or steal, rather than give up four hours a day working, or even less hours volunteering or going to school. There are volunteer jobs that consist of nothing more than sitting with an old person as a companion, and they can’t even be bothered to do that?
there. fixed it.
Their DNA is shovel ready, just too damn lazy...
In our neck of the woods. . .the food stamp card is so abused.. . .an exchange for drugs, non-allowable items (cigarettes, alcohol)rides, etc.
If you have ever seen what is in some of the recipients’ shopping carts, it is so sad. There they are with little kids, piling the cart full of junk food. No fresh produce. Sugar, sugar, sugar, processed meats and then watching them get into their vehicles. . .lighting up cigarettes before putting their vehicles in drive.
Bravo!
Holy Cow! I just forwarded this article to Gov. Edie Calvo. Guam needs to do this!
“Those who refused to comply will probably turn to some kind of crime or scam.”
I’ve been approached countless times, where I “pay” the black dude with the EBT and he’ll”pay” me afterwards. This happens at my nearby Jack In the Box. Some Freepers also had the same situation. Always the brothas..
Stating that the rolls dropped by 9000 doesn’t do it justice.. losing 9000 out of 12000 is a 77.67% decrease in the welfare rolls. Well done, Maine.
Being free from wage tax slavery is very attractive. Maybe the ‘rats could fund the gov’t with voluntaty contributions.
