Republican congressman Thomas Massie (R-KY) introduced a bill to abolish the Department of Education on the very same day that Betsy DeVos was confirmed as the Departments new secretary.
Arguably one of the more succinct bills in the Congressional history, the bill consists of a single sentence reading: The Department of Education shall terminate on December 31, 2018.

Everyday is Christmas :)
If only this would pass.
I would love to see this happen! Get rid of these agencies created in the 70’s. This will probably fail though, it would create massive pushback.
The better way is the Marxist method of creeping change. Have Devos quietly start cutting 10% here, 15% there, keep whittling it away for two years until its just a small department and then kill it off with fire!
Think of the money that would be saved.
I am sure those guys in the DOE wrote the book on financial malfeasance, misappropriation, nepotism, fraud, etc.
That place is awash in funny money programs and people with titles who do absolutely NOTHING.
A gal can dream <^..^>
Would not be surprised if your hypothesis is correct get dems fighting to mill the bill. While she dismantles the department
YES!
The argument I will make to liberals:
“Hey, if we do this, WE CAN FIRE THAT EVIL BETSY DEVOS!!!!”
Keep hitting the Dems on all fronts. Punch-drunk and stupid and ineffectual. That’s the best sort of Dem!
...another rat slush fund
This will hopefully happen, however being somewhat familiar with the ‘government entity’ I am skeptical at this point.
Do you mean federal grants to the states?
As long as those exist the fed will have significant control over local school systems. Why send tax money to DC only to have it return to the states?
Why not 12/31/2017?
Talk about a man crush. This guy is the real deal.
Public schools can't go away. A lot of Charter School schemes, though some are fine, are schemes to enrich a few. It's a lot like how insurance companies profit off health care "reform" by being inserted into the delivery process.
Wow. I have nothing more to say other than my tag line.
Betsy’s job would be to spin it down to a grand total of 6 employees by the end of 2018.
Milton Friedman stated it this way:
If you want to subsidize a transaction (e.g. buying an education), subsidize the buyer, not the seller. That way you still have free market competition to deliver the product.
If you subsidize the seller (schools) you end up with the mess we have now; Entrenched bureaucracy, unions protecting teachers to the detriment of students (no competition = no incentive to improve or even do a good job). Educators pay a lot of lip service to how much they care, but our current performance is terrible and inexcusable.
I think public schools should go away , but we should have some mechanism to ensure a base level of education nationally.
But then, I’m a free market kinda guy.
