American TV abroad
Vanity | Self

Posted on 01/29/2017 3:51:42 PM PST by JosephW

Have moved to Australia and my wife is going crazy as she misses her favorite shows.

Hulu, much of Netflix, PlayStation Vue and many other viewing options are region locked and won't work.

Looking for advice and reasonable price where necessary. At the point of paying someone who has an extensive cable package to install a sling box on an additional cable box.

Thanks in advance.

Our internet connection while not great can support up to 20Mb/sec download without affecting the rest of our services.

Use a VPN (like tunnelbear) and you can ‘trick’ the source into thinking you are in a different country and will enable you to use services like netflix.

Sling box is probably your best option.

There are various ways to watch shows for free online wth sites that have a lot of ad popups.

Sometimes you can find on youtube. Sometimes you can find past seasons on Amazon prime

Btw...there is a way to change your geolocation on your computer. I did it when I wanted to live stream cbs but it wasnt In my current location. I havent Been able to get that to work to watch Murdoch mysteries on canada website...but I did get it to work when watching survivor australia on australian tv

Have you looked into USTVnow?

https://www.ustvnow.com/

It is designed for Americans who are living abroad and there should be no restrictions. You can get a half dozen or so basic network channels free and then pay for subscription if you want more. Check it out.

Get yourself a VPN. Was able to watch Netflix, HBO, etc while living in Saudi Arabia for 2 years. I used a VPN configured router which made the whole thing basically invisible to me. I used Strong VPN and was very happy with their service.

Get an android tv box. There’s a million of them on Amazon. Most have Kodi pre-installed. You install add-ons in Kodi which enable you to stream tv shows usually within a day of air-date, and movies.

There is a guy we pay a few bucks a month for a code so we can unlock a few channels. I think there may be other ways to override that FRiends may know.

Opera browser now has built-in VPN. Not sure what the Aussie edition might allow, but the US edition allows connecting through Canada, Germany, Netherlands.

Netflix and Hulu are both available in Australia. You probably have to hit their techsupport and move your account.

Like TunnelBear, but Hulu and Netflix won’t work through it.

Best advice, indeed. Depending on where you are in Australia, there is probably even an organization of Americans plus Aussies who love Americans.

We connected with such a group soon after we moved to the Tokyo area many, many moons ago. Our Japanese friends outnumbered our American friends by a 10 to 1 ratio or greater. They were very helpful in getting us plugged in to the things we missed about the USA and even more helpful in getting us plugged into the local scene which, in many cases, provided a seriously good (sometimes even better) imitation of things American.

We ended up staying 14 years and loved it.

The author has the added advantage of speaking (roughly) the same language as the locals. In my case, it was only me . . . though our daughter picked it up very quickly.

The author has got a great opportunity. It is nice to connect to home now and then, but don't let him ever forget they are also an ambassadors to one of America's best friends.

Chrome browser has an extension called Hola which tells Netflix that you are in the US or wherever you want.
