For you all Pyromaniacs out there
This is proof that shooting a 30 pound propane tank with a .50 cal incendiary round makes a huge big fire. We all like to shoot at objects and blow up things. While the results is pretty cool, this video is much more impressive. Heres what happens when you shoot a much larger propane tank with a .50 cal incendiary round.
Just as with everything in life, there is always someone eager to see how far you can go with the safety envelope. Whatever you do, don't try this at home!
The video is pretty exciting to watch, not sure if the huge fire was due to the incendiary round that strike the propane tank. Another thing to note is that there are a couple of small fires burning near the propane before this guy shoots it. This could be the reason why for the huge ignite of the fire and explosion. Even so, the results are still pretty impressive! Check it out here.
Working around ranges, you get a bit complacent at times, but then episodes like this make you remember what your working with. Adrenaline was a constant friend. Old ranges are filled with surprises. One of my coworkers was playing with what he thought was a turret bearing one day. (When tank turrets blow off, there are bearings 1-1/2”)
Anyway, heading out for lunch, he threw it down the runway whereupon it exploded—it was an anti personnel device rather than the bearing he expected. The NCO looked like one of those cartoon characters where they turn white from head to toe. Took him quite a while to quit shaking...
Is “Sons of Guns” back on the air?
Shooting a portable 20 lb. propane tank (click here)
About 1 min 15 sec into 2:05 minute clip
** a few pallets of 2000 lb bombs **
Sounds like enough to destroy a small city.
Looking back, it would probably have been a good idea to split it into a few separate shots, but we were still immortal back then. It was definitely the largest mushroom cloud I’ve ever seen and the biggest blast wave, that’s for sure.
It was always fun watching the silent explosions and then waiting to hear them. Bigger is always better, and bored GIs come up with stupid ideas for fun.
No, they are rated in pounds of propane. Those little tanks can hold nowhere near 20 gallons. They do hold 20 pounds, however.
