We all have heard the saying, dont bring a knife to a gun fight. Well what if youre in that predicament that you and a bad guy are in that mano mano, face-to-face situation. Bad guy pulls a knife out, youre able to pull your pistol out, but due to the close quarter distance you're both in a stalemate position. What are some options now for those "in your face" situation.
Enter Jared Wihongi of Black Label Tactical, he is a 16 year Law Enforcement Officer with 13 years as a SWAT operator. Wihongi demonstrates in this video some basic tactics to get an upper hand so you can come out on top. He teaches a simple pragmatic approach that can supplement your gun fighting skills. See the footage here.
Let’s see, he’s pointing a blade at your innards, you are pointing a pistol at this..... Bang Bang Bang....
I never could dance well.
Where do these “professionals” come up with silly and dangerous stuff?
Hand to hand means just that.
Armed means armed, just that.
If I am locked arm to arm within the context of the video, I have failed in so many ways already, now is the time to step up, pivot away from his blade while twisting my pistol towards his torso, if he has his hand on the slide of my pistol, he gets the first shot as the muzzle cones to bear on his torso, then I yank my firing hand/arm viciously back, and continue to back away, attempting to continue firing...
Distance is your friend.
No dance lessons required.
Now let me get this straight. The knife guy is bigger, younger, stronger and faster than I am, I have my strong hand encumbered with a firearm I don’t intend to use, and I’m gonna start wrestling with the guy with the other hand? Does this strike anyone as a particularly intelligent thing to do?
We do a drill at my range:
Bingo! For example, it appears if this guy fires his weapon either intentionally or accidentally, he stands a good chance of blowing a hole in his left arm or hand. That might distract him long enough for assailant2 to finish it.
I saw a demo which curled my hair. Dunno who made it but they were showing the same thing - defense against someone with a knife.
One scenario had a hiker walking along when the Bad Guy comes up saying something along the line of “Hey, man, have you got . . .” as he closes in.
There’s a scuffle with the CCW holder and then a break, and at first nothing was visible.
The demonstrator used a red marker instead of a knife and the CCW holder ended up with a slash across each side of his neck. The demo guy said “I cut your carotid artery on each side by making an “X”. You’d bleed out in 90 seconds.”
I don’t plan to be on any trail, but if some dude heads towards me with the “Hey man” routine, I’m drawing and probably firing.
