Because he chained himself wrist-and-ankles to a party that vowed to destroy the coal industry. He is liable to get his head handed to him in the next election no matter what happens.

Except they are Dem Senators in dark red states who got elected in 2012 riding 0 coattails and face a very tough fight to get re-elected in 2018. The upside is not having to look for work in Jan 2018.

Both have terrible voting records and will be targeted, I believe in '18.

As with Heitkamp there is nothing in it for Manchin so why would he agree?It's a way to elegantly change party affiliation without the stigma of "backstabbing" his party, while being in a real position to help WV. Thought those were pretty obvious.
