This simple test displays the devastating power of the S&W 500. The Smith & Wesson 500 is well known as one of the most powerful handguns on teh planet! These 500-grain bullets can bring down pretty much any animal on earth.
The guys from GY6vids Youtube put together this short video in which he puts one of these gigantic pistols up against a couple of pork shoulders. The results are about what you may expect!
This is a simple test, but an effective one. The huge holes and ridiculous penetration of this round should stop just about anything on earth. Talk about some devastating power! It's little wonder this handgun has such a reputation and is so popular with the world's most serious handgun hunters. What are you carrying as a backup against bear? See the full footage here.
I have the S&W 500 (10.5” barrel) and honestly, due to the heavier frame of the 500, the felt recoil is about the same as every .44 Magnum I’ve ever shot.
That said, the boom of the 500 is noticeably greater. =D
Split decision: for flavor — pork shoulder, for self-defense — S&W!
The pork shoulder is just as effective at keeping jihadis away...
I love my 460’s. But alas, They were lost in a boating accident. :-(
Checkout the Big Horn Armory Model 89.... pricey!

Especially one that’s been “tenderized”.
Excellent point!
I have seen ads for that rifle and it looks nice.
I still think I would just as soon have a modern model 1886 in 45-70.
I live in a state where you can deer hunt with pistols and pistol rounds in rifles. My uncle hunts with a single shot .50 rifle. My son and I hunt with Marlin lever action rifles chambered in .44 magnum. I can hit a paper plate at 150 yds all day. Don't need more range in these parts. Well placed shot will drop a whitetail at that range. Really good coyote and general varmint gun as well.
For some reason a lot of gun guys have strongly held opinions that have merely a passing acquaintance with facts. I’ve seen at least two women fire this, one-handed, with complete control. So much for your opinion. It is a lovely pistol.
I live back east. In the woods I hunt, a long shot is 75 yards. The last deer I took was honestly a third of that; the .30-06 I carry is definitely overkill, but the rifle is an old favorite.
I use jackhammer gloves with mine. They work really well. When I first got it, I thought I was going to need an XRay of my right hand. I could still feel it after about a month. I’m a big dude and I don’t normally have an issue with heavy recoiling handguns. That thing is a beast.
I live in the rust belt. It is illegal to hunt with a rifle that shoots anything other than a pistol load. Ironically, I know a fellow that hunts with a .270 pistol. A somewhat convoluted law. I've never shot a deer over 100 yards. Most around here are taken right near your blind. A number of years ago, I was in a natural ground blind and had a deer walk right up behind me. Funny now; I could not see his horns, but I could see between his back legs that he was a buck! He was snorting and rutting in the brush of my blind. He eventually smelled or heard me and ran off into dense woods and I didn't try a shot. Pretty sure I got the same buck a few days later. I had seen him at a distance many times that fall.
