Jeb Bush asks new Republican administration to flex its muscles with a constitutional convention

In an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush makes the case that the incoming Republican administration should set the agenda by calling for a constitutional convention to establish term limits, a balanced budget amendment and restrictions on the Commerce Clause.

Bush asserts that the 2016 election was largely a protest vote over the growth and power of the central government and that Republicans have a rare chance to shift some of that power back to the states.

Bush wrote:

But here’s something we shouldn’t forget: This election was more about voting against something than voting for something. Americans voted against the “establishment,” against the country’s changing culture, against a dysfunctional Washington, against the privileged,

Exactly! We are not the same country as we were in 1776.

Too much indoctrination by liberal media and schools has changed the U.S.

The only thing that we have to save the country is the Constitution the way the Founders wrote it.

Getting rid of the Electoral College would be first on the agenda.

After all who cares about how people in “flyover country” feel? /sarc

I agree. Maybe he is trying to be relevant in the new Republican party. But give the guy his due, even a blind RINO finds and acorn now and again.

No way to keep the so-called “progressives” out and no way to prevent them doing anything.

We already have the language in the Constitution to destroy so-called “progressivism” at the federal level.

But while Republicans seek to protect FDR’s legacy of high handed lawlessness yet somehow slow it’s growth (and only occasionally) we must endure the madness that is bankrupting us!

Whether initiated by the states, or at the call from the bully pulpit, it’s STILL a Convention of the States with the exact same powers.

Be smart. It does not matter who issues the call.

Be Smart.

There’s are a lot of Conservatives calling for a Convention of the States under Article 5.

The linked article starts out with a fundamentally wrong statement & all the people below posting have fallen into the trap!

AN ARTICLE V CONVENTION IS NOT A CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION!

Its a convention to propose amendments That is all it can do.
Then the states have to decide yay or nay on the amendments!

And yes I know the original Constitutional Convention was called to simple amend the Articles of Confederation. I think the legal structures & “custom” are stronger here then in May 25 1787 (When the Constitutional Convention started!), and that will keep it strictly and Article V convention.

Yes I could be wrong but I think its worth the risk!

“No way to keep the so-called “progressives” out and no way to prevent them doing anything.”

You should quit insisting on being ignorant.

A proposed amendment requires the approval of 2/3 of the states.

A ratified amendment requires 3/4 of state legislatures. 38 states.

No need for a Con Con. Just go through the amendment process. Anything else is just somebody else’s agenda.

Nothing wrong with that IMHO but right after that he starts lecturing us just like obamao does every chance he gets. It’s a major turn off which practically nullifies everything he might say.

One would think someone with that much experience would have learned that by now.

I voted for a border wall to be built, Jeb. I didn't vote for your agenda.
