Jeb Bush asks new Republican administration to flex its muscles with a constitutional convention

In an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush makes the case that the incoming Republican administration should set the agenda by calling for a constitutional convention to establish term limits, a balanced budget amendment and restrictions on the Commerce Clause.

Bush asserts that the 2016 election was largely a protest vote over the growth and power of the central government and that Republicans have a rare chance to shift some of that power back to the states.

Bush wrote:

But here’s something we shouldn’t forget: This election was more about voting against something than voting for something. Americans voted against the “establishment,” against the country’s changing culture, against a dysfunctional Washington, against the privileged,

An amendment for balanced budgets will end in a requirement for ever increasing taxes. Once it is required that spending shall equal income, how quickly do you think it will be before Congress claims the Constitution handcuffs them in raising taxes to cover ever-higher spending?

Exactly. The tax-and-spend statists would love nothing more than having a constitutional excuse like a balanced budget amendment to squeeze ever increasing revenue from the middle class.

I'd wager that Genius Jeb didn't think that far. Or did he?

Seriously, does he mean Constitutional Convention, or did he get smart one night on a long drive listening to Mark Levin and he meant to say Convention of States?....

Sorry, Jeb, if you want to join this parade after it has passed you, you will have to be the street sweeper.

(I really wanted the results of an elephant parade.)

Because people like Jeb will turn it to their DC political class desired

There is much Trump needs to do before expending political capital on this.

The states ought to do this not the president...that way they can put restrictions and conditions on it

Jeb: He’s the reform candidate, Daddy.

- Yeah? - A lot of people like that reform.

Jeb: Maybe we should get us some.

Term Limits and a Balanced Budget Amendment are not all they're cracked up to be.

We've had both here in California for over 20 years. We are now a one-party state trillions of dollars in debt.

I have no doubt that Terri Schiavo is a big reason why he lost. He will never live that down, no pun intended.

I can’t forgive him for that. I remember making phone calls to his office, pleading with them to have him do something for her.

We were all very upset and sad.

Maybe someday he will be subject to the same treatment; what goes around comes around (this is a philosophical thought, btw; I do not wish him harm).

Always choose life! My children know how strongly I feel about this. (21 year-old son; 17 year-old daughter).
