During recent remodeling at our house, we ran into delays caused by ‘change orders’ from my wife ;-)

We cooked on a two burner camping stove for nearly 5 weeks on one tank of propane. We *DO* have the adapter to attach our camp stove to a BBQ tank.

We had a problem with both ice and snow storms in the past. The Farm and Home stores sold out of GENERATORS bought by people “just in Case”!
When the ice and snow melted, the people who bought them brought them back and demanded their money back. Nothing wrong with them, they didn’t need them now! The ice was gone!

Now the local stores sell, but do not allow returns on generators.

By myself without power after Hurricane Andrew in Baton Rouge. Single girl attending LSU in an off campus apartment. Tree fell on my truck so I couldn't go anywhere. No cell phones back then.

Prep: filled the propane tank, got a battery radio, filled bathtub, (I had a tub with separate shower), got candles and batteries, and a hurricane tracking chart.

Power went out before storm, stayed out for two weeks. I moved milk and eggs to freezer and gradually ate the frozen food as it thawed on my gas grill with a side burner. My brother came to see me after a week with a $20 bag of ice and he winched the tree off of my truck.

Tips: 1. Have a lot of paperbacks. 2. Use candles for light and save batteries for radio. 3. DRIP COFFEEPOT and gas side burner on grill if you must have coffee. (I must.)

TADSLOS :'Three days? Pfft.. That’s barely enough time to get in a weenie roast."

Right ! But only if you know its a three day outage
We can stil learn from the Aussies
A weenie roast ? There are many who don't even know the difference between a weenie, a hot dog, a frankfurter, a smoked sausage, and a bratwurst.
Ever heard of a "white hot"(beef and pork)... only available around Western NY .

Pity those who cannot do without!
We were born on the High Plains with no electricity, city water, or gas. Had an outdoor toilet, windmill and water tank, wood or COAL stove.

We did just fine. I still have camp toilets if I need to save the water in my tanks. Propane, oil lamps, water well.

Now power loss in the HOT SUMMER is a different matter! I bought a generator for the small AC unit and the wife’s oxygen machine. Lots of stored gasoline on hand.

Am now going to buy a generator.

Excellent idea I did the same about 2 years ago after having to toss out $300 dollars worth of food twice in one year.

Since then I have used it on two occasions and I can it set up in under 5 min.

Just make sure you have sufficient gas on hand because if it is a major outage there will not be a gas station in your area with the ability to pump.

I have a 15 gal hand cart that I use to refill my boat, it would run my generator for well over a week.

Actually, solar powered garden lights can work well for light in the evening.

They'll recharge all day long and then last for hours like they do outside.

After hurricane Andrew our entire housing development did not have power for 6 months. That is not a typo.

There was no police or military presence of any kind for 6 weeks. The army was there but after a day the feral elements figured out that they were not allowed to carry ammo and were therefore superfluous.

You could hear gun fire all night long as home owners ‘discouraged’ looters. None of this made the news.

That’s an awesome idea that had never occurred to me.
Thanks!

I’ve got a boat too and always have non-ethanol gas on hand for it. Gonna have to buy a couple more 5 gallon containers though:-)

***Take sponge baths in the bathroom sink. Bathe the dirty parts. A weekly shower is ENOUGH, with bird baths the rest of the time.***

"One quart of water is all you need!"

Photobucket is giving me serious problems. I want to post an article from an old 1880 book HILL'S MANUAL OF SOCIAL AND BUSINESS FORMS, but Photobucket will not let me for some reason. I've about had it with them.

Anyway, the photo is instructions on how to use ONE QUART of water to keep yourself clean.

http://www.centralmainediesel.com/order/Honda-16kw-Propane-Generator.asp?page=H04599

I’m nearly finished with the process of putting one of these in that runs off of natural gas. I ordered the autostart option so it COULD be started via an automatic transfer switch, but for now will just be using a manual transfer toggle on the main breaker box and will roll it outdoors from where it is stored in my heated garage (keeps the oil and all else warm in winter), and will connect the gas a rubber 1” gas hose to a quick disconnect I installed, and will plug it into the house breaker panel via a 50amp outlet and a short 4wire/#6 copper rubber cable with Hubble 50amp connectors between the genny and the outlet when I need to run it.

Had to get my gas service upgraded from 1/2” to 3/4” and then installed a short run of dedicated 1” gas pipe from the meter that terminates in the quick connect, as this sucker takes a LOT of natural gas to run!

We lose our power a lot here in my part of Colorado, and sometimes it’s been down for days. Not fun to live in the cold and dark when you’re old.

Now I have to make it my mission to try a white hot. I remember having power outages from severe ice storms in Middle TN that lasted three weeks at a time. Everything was done over a cooking fire and we used coleman gas lanterns for as long as we had fuel for them.

We lost power for seven days or so following a hurricane a few years ago. Fortunately, after the first few days a friend loaned us a generator. The most difficult challenge was lack of water.

No problems here. I'll wait until I need to get the 'fridge and freezer back in operation...maybe an hour or three throughout the day...then fire up my 5K watt generator using my 80 gallon supply of Pri-G stabilized, regularly rotated gas.

Lighting and heating is not genset dependent nor is cooking. I figure I'll have enough supplies to last whatever comes.
