Trump’s D.C. Hotel: Traditional Architecture at Its Most Elegant
Spectator (UK) ^ | 17 October 2016 | Erik Root

hile many in media lament the fact that Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump has an occasional vulgar mouth, these shortsighted fifth columnists fail to consider the entire man.

There is one aspect of his life that has been decidedly refined, and that is his architectural taste. In fact, >b>Trump is the consummate conservative when it comes to his developments; his is an explicit rejection of what we might find in an authoritarian or totalitarian regimes.

The Washington Post, among the many other old media outlets, ran several screeds complaining about the renovations of Donald Trump’s International Hotel, which is the Old Post Office building in Washington, D.C. From the unfinished minor interior blemishes, to the fact that it costs more than a Motel 6 to stay the night, and finally to the effete claims that the food is passé, the hotel’s architectural renovation is purposely ignored in order to attempt his personal embarrassment.

Trump’s properties say something about the man. His buildings and renovations are explicit rejections of modernism, and wherever possible, represent a return to the classical forms of beauty.

Trump has what we might call a traditional architectural taste, which would be more appropriately called architectural style. When it comes to the development of his properties, he is not given to fashionable trends. With the rare exception, every property he develops conforms to a classical design and long established norms. His hotel in D.C. is no different. While the outside of the hotel was kept intact, it was the renovation of the interior that we see the most significant Trump imprint.

Trump has vision.

Most people would call for a building like that to be demolished, and replaced with some bland black glass tower.

Trump saw the potential of this architectural jewel in the rough, and then developed it.

Trump is a builder, and I have a great respect for true builders and their vision.

Learned a new word today, from this article: “cortile”.

It means “an enclosed area, typically roofless and arcaded, within, internal to, or attached to a building.”

If Hillary wins America will look like North Korea.

And tree bark and grass will be the only items on the menu.

Staying there is on my revised Bucket List, right behind attending the Trump Inauguration.

Hopefully I can accomplish both at the same time. #;^)

I’m definitely a Trump supporter, but I’m glad that his penchant for gold leaf appears to have been very restrained with the Old Post Office renovation.

Amen. Old buildings being restored make me very happy. He and his family should live there for the first six months while 1600 “airs out”.

As a New Yorker, this is the building I associate most with Trump. And the most with black glass towers. Unlike the DC hotel, he's responsible for its outward face. In fairness, it is a cool black glass tower, and it was pretty cutting-edge in its day. I'm not criticizing him, only the irony of your word choice.

They always talk about the private retreats of the presidents as “white houses.” It’d be pretty funny if Trump’s home-away-from-DC was in DC.

Well, not in all cases...

That building looks like Richardson’s Allegheny Courthouse in Pittsburgh from the late 19th century.

But there’s an art to pulling off gaudy Vegas neon schlock while still being perceived as upscale, you’ve got to admit.

And the new golf course in Scotland...opened on BREXIT day

Apparently he went back to original 1906 drawings for the re-build.
