Water Wise: Don’t let that soil get away!

Now that our monsoon is winding down, perhaps you are noticing areas on your property where heavy rainfalls have begun to wash away one of your most precious resources – your soil.

Depending on the topography of your property, you may notice areas of bare ground, new small channels that are forming or older channels that are deepening with every rain event. Soil erosion is a natural and human-caused phenomenon worldwide and can even be seen from space through satellite imagery.

For example, a quick peak on Google Maps of the delta south of New Orleans shows a very muddy, brown river where millions of tons of topsoil have been transported down the Mississippi and deposited into the Gulf of Mexico.

The last three years have seen unusual amounts of rainfall here south of Dallas. The erosion has been awful because of it. I had to buy a tractor with a front end loader and many dump truck loads of rock to fill them. Once I get the washouts filled in, then I am able to cover them with good topsoil. With grass cover, that dirt stays in place.

Impossible.

Global warming dictates there will never be any more rain. There will be massive rains. There will be endless floods. There will be endless drought. There will be hot winters. There will be cold summers. Now.... Global warming will steal our topsoil.

END GLOBAL WEATHER NOW!!!

Yeah, we’re on top of a limestone hill in Hill county. I’ve put several erosion deterrents in place in addition to grass. When the flooding rains come I am always in recovery mode.

I have a small lot in suburia but I fight this battle with every gusher. The water runs black in the beginning with organic particulates and then goes clear.

And that is when I know I lost.

Have you tried putting in a cloth fence to contain the organic particulates? Just something six inches tall with a open wire backing to keep it standing up will work.
