Who cares about the law?

If powerful people decide its an impediment to getting what they want, it can be dispensed with.

And there is no constitutional requirement for voters to pick the electors.

Under the Constitution, states can change the rule and it would be perfectly legal.

People do, as far as it is figured into popular expectation.

As I just mentioned before, people are expecting an election and my prognostication is that it will be forced to happen, even if there is a Democrat deus ex machina.
