Op-Ed What's missing when you hike the California backcountry? People of color

Last month, two friends and I backpacked for a week in the Sierra Nevada. We hiked through meadows dotted with wildflowers, slept beneath snow-draped peaks and met plenty of other hikers: the dad and son whose Green Bay Packers caps sparked a conversation about our mutual ties to Wisconsin; scientists from UC Santa Cruz studying flowers and rock formations; five recent college grads from Kentucky who were hiking the John Muir Trail before they scattered to begin their adult lives.

But as the days passed, I grew increasingly troubled by the people we didn’t meet. There were a few Asian hikers, including a couple of hapas like me (I’m half Japanese and half Polish) and one of my friends was half-Iranian, but not a single backpacker who was Latino or African American.

This near-total absence of people of color — which I’ve noticed on past trips as well — was particularly striking because it was such a contrast to my everyday life. I live and work in Los Angeles. The majority of people in my working life are Latino, African American or Asian, and the people in my personal life, including my Mexican American spouse, are reflective of the city’s population.

Yes folks, there are actually liberals among us who wring their hands over this "unfair" phenomena.

The obvious solution is to charge us "crackas" a $500/day entry fee into the backcountry and to raise taxes and bus inner-city children up to the Sierras so they too can enjoy the backcountry.

What a dumb ####. Her brain is allowed to make a voting decision. That’s scary.

I’d say they are tired of backpacking after crossing the border.

If I’m reading her right, she wasn’t able to talk her Mexican American husband into coming along.

Seems like a personal choice sort of issue, like, um, abortion. Blacks and latinos have chosen to abort the camping trip.

Seems like a solution in search of a problem to me.

Yeah, we’re turning ‘em back at the edges of the wilderness...or maybe they don’t CHOOSE to visit the wonders of nature!

Yes, force those colored people out into the wilderness! Make them sleep outdoors on the ground! Let them get lost and die and be eaten by cougars. ONWARD!

Wasn’t there an article a few months ago about how threatening the National Parks are to minorities? Can’t quite remember why that was supposedly so.

Not just California backcountry...

I’ve hiked all over the Smoky Mountains and haven’t seen a “person of color” in the backcountry there either...And very, very few in the campgrounds in the Park....

So, we’re supposed to force non-whites (and whites of other-than-Christian religions) to go out and experience the great outdoors now?

Try getting the average black.person to join a sailing trip across Lake Michigan in a 29 foot sloop.

1. The trees supposedly make blacks think of the days when they were lynched.

2. Park Ranger uniforms scare Hispanics because they look so much like Border Patrol uniforms.

3. I wish I was kidding.

It reminded them of the Hanging Trees!

Ever think about this???

African-Americans love to associate themselves with their “African roots”, yet, in Africa, quite a lot of the black Africans live in the wild...They hunt, fish, tend livestock, grow their own food...

The “African-Americans” live in urban city settings and very seldom go in the wild...

Let them get lost and die and be eaten by cougars.

They won't kill each other fast enough and we aren't getting enough of them to abort their children. So we will add another approach to 'solving the problem.' (/Democrat)

Probably they don’t like to go and be stared at since there are few role models for minorities in the outdoors and 99% of everyone else there is white. It might change if Parks and recreation groups actually went into these communities with a full fledged education campaign, I’m not sure.

Question is, would this liberal snowflake force people of color to participate in something they wouldn't otherwise be interested in for the sake of diversity?
