I don’t need air conditioning, and neither do you
WAPO ^ | Aug. 18, 2016 | Karen Heller

It’s time to come out of the closet. Or, more precisely, the sweat lodge.

My family lives without air conditioning, except for one antique, semi-comatose window unit that “cools” the bedroom to approximately the same temperature as Dallas at dusk.

Our house in Philadelphia was built in the 1920s, when people were tough and resourceful. For most of the year, the house is cool and pleasant, as long as there isn’t a mash-up of continuously scorching days and epic humidity, when the air is putrid, stagnant and, if it were a color, would definitely be mustard.

Which would be this summer. Which, so far, is the fourth-hottest summer on record in the Washington area. Emphasis on so far. NASA reports that July was the Earth’s hottest in recorded history. Cheer up, people say to those of us without air conditioning, September’s coming. Except people forget that most of September is still summer.

Karen Heller may very well don’t need a/c.

But we don’t hear people surrounding her complaining about her armpit smell, either.

And I bet her spouse/children complain and complained a lot. That is, if she’s fortunate enough to have any.

I'm highly heat intolerant. Just 30 minutes of doing relatively outdoor work in light cotton will have me pouring sweat. Make it one hour and I have to come in or pass out.

Make it cold and I'm the other extreme. As long as my hands, feet and head are covered, I can shovel snow in shirtsleeves. A light jacket is okay, but if I wear what most people wear in the same type of weather, I start pouring sweat.

Well...so?

It isnt some contest to see who can brag about sweating in the heat like it builds character.

My house is over 100 years old and the upper floors can easily hit 98 degrees on a sunny day.

I have AC because I live I the future where we don’t have to die of heat stroke.

By the way, I don’t buy the claim that July was the hottest month on record.

That's the rub, that whole "on record" part. Totally meaningless. If records weren't kept before they were "on record" how do you know what temperatures were 200 years, 2,000 years, 200,000 years ago?

Whole house fans can work, but work best when the house is designed for it and the climate supports them.

If southerners don’t need AC, then yankees don’t need heating. /s

She boasts of her AC-free life in the first person singular. No husband to embrace, one guesses. There may be a correlation.

I see you’re brand new here. Why are you sweating in your little apartment?

Spoken like clueless northerner who thinks a few days of 80 degrees is summer and has never lived in 100 degree temps for weeks on end. People DIED because of the HEAT after Katrina-died in their powerless homes after surviving the storm and flooding! Without power for 8 days after Issac, my home INSIDE was above 100 degrees! Let all those who don’t need swap homes during summer with those of us who are frying in the South and elsewhere. Come live the REAL summer-for 6 months-and we’ll throw in nervousness about possible hurricanes for real excitement.

Was her telling you and me, with an air of moral superiority that we need to stop using AC necessary?

She expressed her opinion about my values, I expressed mine about her face. We’re even.

I grew up in Houston. We had no air conditioning at home. We only had a whole house fan. There was no AC in school either.

When my Granddad got sick and moved in with us, my folks put a window unit in his room. And then an AC in the den.

It wasn’t until I got to High School, was there any AC in school. Except for the temporary buildings.

Why would I go back to No AC? Never!

I read an article on “Who Won The West.” It wasn’t Sam Colt, the 7th Cavalry or Clint Eastwood. It was Carrier, the AC people.

I wonder if the leftist enviro-fascists will allow us to at least have electric fans when they take over?

Exactly. I’m sure all the WaPo folks who need to wear suits, ties and pantyhose during the hot and humid months really enjoy working and sweating in restrictive clothing (and stinking of BO to high heaven). I’ll bet they never turn on the AC in their cars either, since they are so environmentally virtuous.
