I don’t need air conditioning, and neither do you
WAPO ^ | Aug. 18, 2016 | Karen Heller

It’s time to come out of the closet. Or, more precisely, the sweat lodge.

My family lives without air conditioning, except for one antique, semi-comatose window unit that “cools” the bedroom to approximately the same temperature as Dallas at dusk.

Our house in Philadelphia was built in the 1920s, when people were tough and resourceful. For most of the year, the house is cool and pleasant, as long as there isn’t a mash-up of continuously scorching days and epic humidity, when the air is putrid, stagnant and, if it were a color, would definitely be mustard.

Which would be this summer. Which, so far, is the fourth-hottest summer on record in the Washington area. Emphasis on so far. NASA reports that July was the Earth’s hottest in recorded history. Cheer up, people say to those of us without air conditioning, September’s coming. Except people forget that most of September is still summer.

I’m waiting to see what happens when the power goes out of the Eastern Grid, and everyone gets to sample Karen Heller’s non-ac future.

I deny, reject and repudiate the sentiments expressed. And I’m up in Pennsylvania.

So let’s see how many folks in Wash DC decided to stick out August this year.

Perhaps the First Family could set an example of staying in DC the whole month, holding press conferences for “senior” WaPo reporters, who could then so gloriously regale us with stories of the good ole days.

Let’s shut off AC to all of the government buildings in DC and VA, then all liberal media outlets in DC.

That would save a bunch of carbon emissions.

The entire article is actually quite worth reading, but only if one has an interest in excellent examples of dreadful writing.

Here is one example from the flighty and awkward piece:

And, yes, to humble-brag, which I may be doing right now, about our greater tolerance, lower carbon footprint and puny electric bills, which are half the temperature outside.

Weather affects people very negatively. If it is uncomfortable it manifests through their moods and behaviors with others.

200,000 years ago most of North America was covered in ice.
Pretty cold, I imagine.

“Being in air conditioning most of the time in the summer reduces your tolerance for heat,” he says.”

I live in southern Arizona. I went for a run yesterday when it was over 100 degrees. But I’m not going to spend my life sweating and miserable just to make some candy butt environmentalist happy!

If anyone wants to understand the Second Amendment, let them come and try to take my AC away...

I live in Sacramento, California. We get long stretches of hot weather between 95 to 110 °F. in the summer. That's why I have air conditioning and also insulated windows all the way around the house to keep the heat out in summer.

To the WaPo writer: that's a YOU problem. :p

I live in south Florida, and is does indeed get pretty hot around here... especially in the summer.

My house has three central air conditioning systems, and they all run pretty much all the time. That's life around here.

An old hippie chick. When you're 25-30, you get get away with that just-out-of-bed, "natural" outdoorsie look.

When you write for a national newspaper in the STYLE section and you're 60 year old, you CAN'T. Unless she's going for the "Guess-what-gender-I-am?" look.

Ok, then why don’t you come to Alabama during the summer & attempt to survive without air conditioning? Let’s see how long you last.

(Not directed at you PROCON, but to the tool that wrote this screed.)

I don’t need air conditioning

That's nice.

and neither do you

Shut up. Make decisions for yourself and I'll take care of making decisions for me.

The arrogance and presumption of liberals knows no bounds. My aging mother lives with us. Air conditioning has a lot to do with the fact that older people are living longer and healthier lives throughout the world. I'm not prepared to sacrifice my mom's well-being on the altar of liberal idiocy and enviro-guilt.

It is not within your purview to tell me what I do or do not need. Keep your eyes on your own house.

We live in South Georgia, USA on a sailboat.

No A/C, just some small fans and river breezes.

Good thing we go to work most days where it is air conditioned.

Been lucky so far this year. While we have had something like 58 straight days of 90+ temps, the nights have been down in the 70s or low 80s. At least we can sleep.

The growth of America’s forest cover has confounded the global warming crowd because the US has exceeded its share of international goals for reduction in net carbon dioxide emissions. The European reaction has been to sniff that Americans should not be able to claim credit for letting their forests grow. Nevertheless, the US also made substantial gains in energy efficiency. In sum, even if global warming claims are credited, we have earned the right to our air conditioning.
