coups have been going on in Turkey for decades, all while being a NATO country.

NATO’s mission since the fall of the USSR has been to provide extremely cushy make-work jobs for the elites of Europe. That’s it.

Odds are the NATO forces would be told to stay in place and defend themselves if attacked.

Nothing new...happened a lot in the past. The key is that the coup’ers are friendly to us, which will certainly be the case here.

WHICH WAY DO YOU WANT IT?
The leaders of France have simply rolled over and assumed the fetal position....
The French foreign minister described their plight as "sangfroid".
Nuts simply Nuts....

Time for a history lesson. Coups are a well established tradition in NATO member Turkey. The democracies will wail for a while, may put in some mild sanctions (particularly on the purchase of military hardware), and in a year or two a new constitution will be adopted and new elections will be held, at which point the sanctions will be removed, and the merchants of death will get their customer back.

I think history shows Muslim countries are better off being ruled by a secular military.
To answer your question, I think NATO only applies if the country is attacked from the outside.

The United States is a NATO country and we nearly suffered a coup yesterday; but the perpetrators got slapped down in the convention rules committee. Had they succeeded, I don't think NATO would have stepped in.

I think NATO would only be obligated to help if it were discovered that Russia was coordinating the coup.
But even then, the committee meetings necessary for NATO to take action would take years.

Internal conflict.
Doesn’t count.

Article 5 is for invasions, not coup-de-etats.
But you raise an interesting question. I’ve been wondering about Greece, didn’t they have something similar to this back in the early days of the Cold War? Maybe I’m mistaken.

NATO ignores him.
This is not a matter for NATO.
