Local View: Wealth inequality sowing the seeds of another civil war
The Duluth News Tribune ^ | May 27, 2016 | Bernie Hughes

I have concluded that not doing fairly unto others ultimately could bring about another U.S. civil war. Please hear me out. See if you don’t agree it could happen unless the growing unfair political financial tide is corrected.

The growing spread of wealth inequality has been underway for many years. It has come to pass even in a democracy and a so-called exceptional nation.

I’m not a history major, but in my serious interpretation, another civil war appears to be a distinct possibility. Doing great and greater for the financially elite and less and less for others has come to have a life of its own. Isn’t it time we fortunate Americans see that other Americans need and receive a fair shake? Beyond just a feeling of what we should do for each other, we could make it legal to do what is right for everyone.

Among the changes we could make, first off, I would raise our minimum wage and our charitable contributions to the point of bringing all Americans out of poverty. We could set a minimum wage that eliminates poverty.

Where do we get the money? We could judiciously select from the following:

•Set a maximum wage. A starting point could be 10 times higher than the minimum wage.
•Simplify the tax code. It presently has become a cat-and-mouse game and complicated to the point where wealth calls the final shots.
•Reduce military expenditures, which may produce the most money of any idea. It isn’t only the needless wars, we have troops in several hundred locations around the world under the guise of national defense. Other nations see us in their backyards and feel it is they who need defending.
•Several years ago, Wikipedia offered a list of tax haven-using Americans who were hiding money from taxation. The IRS owes all honest taxpayers an apology for a job not well done. And the ironic part meant to be serious: Too many Americans criticize people in poverty who can’t find work as unworthy citizens.
•We should seriously consider adopting a transactional tax. This was proposed by Nobel Prize Laureate James Tobin. This could be done to raise money needed as those with the highest incomes and the most wealth pay a disproportionate share.
•Inheritance taxes should be reinstituted at a reasonable level.

This list could be extended if we truly wished to do unto others as we so often indicate in religious settings. And if we wish to avoid another civil war.

******

“wealth inequality” has been present in all human societies from the beginning of time

that is NOT the problem (indeed, its far less anyway in USA than many other countries)

the problem is the disasterous (almost non-existent) job market under Obama’s anti-USA, anti-business, anti-jobs policies..................plus the almost shut-down of so many lines of opportunity for people to start and succeed with small business ventures.

Pull off the yoke of Obama on the American economy and jobs.....and many “potential revolutionaries” will gladly be able to get back into the labor market (or business) again

Work hard all day, come home to a loving family, spend quality time with them, rest, do it again day in and day out...not much time for a civil war.

It’s not wealth inequality. It’s the greed of underachievers and the culturally worthless.

Just let government control what everyone is allowed to own, huh? Sounds pretty simple—what could go wrong? Socialist revolutions have gone so well in other countries.

Since when does each person earning his own (different) wage per year lead to civil war? Wealth difference is the history of mankind since humans lived in caves. (Envy, stimulated by politicians, leads to class conflict. I will grant you that.)

There will be a civil war but it won’t be against the rich. The rich will be the spectators.

Because we’ve allowed a growing number of them (including illegals and visa jumpers) to get on the gravy train since at least LBJ and no one wants to tell them no. Now they’re almost the majority.
