Considering an opportunity which would require moving down to Tupelo, MS.

Thanks in advance.

An interesting fact:

The spring of 1936 brought Tupelo one of its worst-ever natural disasters, part of the Tupelo-Gainesville tornado outbreak of April 5–6 in that year. The storm leveled 48 city blocks and over 200 homes, killing 216 people and injuring more than 700 persons. It struck at night, destroying large residential areas on the city's north side. Among the survivors was Elvis Presley, then a baby. Obliterating the Gum Pond neighborhood, the tornado dropped most of the victims' bodies in the pond. The storm has since been rated F5 on the modern Fujita scale. The Tupelo Tornado is recognized as one of the deadliest in U.S. history

The area is subject to tornadoes. In 2008 one rated an EF3 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale struck the town. On April 28, 2014, a large tornado struck Tupelo and the surrounding communities, causing significant damage.

Perhaps a tornado shelter might be in order!!!

I’m a northerner who first visited in lived in Memphis for a year.

I loved it. People are genuinely kind and friendly, both black and white. It was a lot hotter than I was used to, especially in summer, but that was fine too. I visited Northern Mississippi quite a lot, and while I couldn’t tell you about neighborhoods or schools, Tupelo didn’t have the attractions a larger city like Memphis had, I found it pleasant. I would rather be there than a lot of other small cities in the USA.

I teach in north Mississippi & have several colleagues who come from the Tupelo/New Albany area. I go to Tupelo several times a year for shopping & just getting away for a day! New Albany is quite close to Tupelo & one colleague is very happy w/ the education her kids receive. They also have a tennis team! My former dental hygienist was from Tupelo & she sent her daughter to a private daycare/school.

Check out New Albany too. They have one of the best bakeries ever, Sugaree’s! Yum! The Tupelo Automobile Museum is great. The downtown charming. They also have several festivals.

Why not just type Tupelo MS into your search engine and voila! a literal plethora of facts are unveiled for your perusal.

The Internet can only be a basic guide about a given area. There is nothing like the expertise of residents who have lived there to tell you what it's really like. I think that's what the poster was looking for.

I just spent a week in Chicago area and thanks to my family who live in the area, they gave me some great restaurants to go to and some things to do around the city that did not come up for me in prior Internet searches or sites like Yelp, TravelAdvisor, etc.

Then some folks had best pick out some old bed sheets, cut holes in them for the eyes and get some conical hats. Then mount up their steeds and ride off to do battle.

Why be such a snot? A self congratulatory press release is not the same as hearing from people with personal experience.

“Somewhat obscure rock n roll reference ping.”

Van Morrison: she’s as sweet as Tupelo honey.

Actually, Tupelo honey is really a thing. I bought a big jar of it when passing thru. It has its own distinctive flavor (awesome!) due to the native wildflowers in the region.

It’s a long way from Montana. Other than that it sounds like an okay place. Good luck.

Thanks Leaning. I’m looking at the surrounding areas as well. Worst case, I’m trying to keep a daily commute to a minimal in order to keep as much time for family.

I grew up in NW Alabama & have visited Tupelo frequently. It’s a nice town & growing pretty rapidly.

It has good places to shop & eat & the people seem friendly.

Good luck!
